Day two in Glasgow brings drama and goals

Euros day 2 1It was another excellent day of hockey at the EuroHockey Youth Championship II competition in Glasgow as the second day brought drama, late goals, and exceptional action.

Day two saw Belarus record their second victory of the tournament with a 3-1 victory over Lithuania. The opening goal was scored by Karyna Batsiukova, who finished off a well-worked move on 26 minutes to give Belarus the lead.

Belarus scored their second early in the second half when Karina Zhuk scored from close range, and then it was 3-0 minutes later when the ball was smashed into the net by Ina Kaminskaya on 51 minutes. Lithuania pulled one back when Kotryna Kartanovic scored a penalty flick on 65 minutes.

Glasgow was then treated to a France and Ukraine double header. France girls once again looked strong as they stormed to 4-1 win over Ukraine. The French got off to a great start by scoring a stylish team goal, complimented by a fantastic finish from Delfina Gaspari on 14 minutes. Ukraine equalised in the 20th minute through Karyna Leonova with a lovely assist from Valeriia Nikulina. Two minutes later France took the lead again after some great skill and finish by Yohanna Lhopital. Capucine Mas made it 3-1 on 48 minutes; tapping the ball into an open goal from close range. Julie Brachet finished the scoring on 64 minutes to make the score 4-1 to France.

Euros day 2Ukraine were defeated by France boys in one of the most entertaining matches of the tournament so far. Eliot Curty scored in the second minute giving France an early lead. Ukraine equalised when Yurii Dzemukh scored on 32 minutes; smashing the ball high into the French net.

France took the lead again when Timothée Clément scored an improvised goal on 46 minutes; controlling the ball above his head and smashing it into the net. France were edging the play and nearly advanced their lead through a great passing team move but the shot from Adrien Coffigniez smashed off the post. France then sealed the win with a great goal by Martin Poupée in the last minute to make it Ukraine 1-3 France.

Last up was host nation Scotland boys taking on Wales and a dramatic late winner from Scotland’s Aidan McQuade gave the Scot’s a 3-2 victory, and put them through to the semi-finals. Wales opened the scoring – a penalty corner was fired into the D and then slotted through for Wood diving at the far post to score. McQuade equalised for Scotland from a penalty corner – he smashed the ball low into the net to make it 1-1. Scotland took the lead in the second half when Dean Baber scored from a rebound off the keeper’s legs following a penalty corner.

From a penalty corner Ioan Wall equalised for Wales, smashing the ball into the bottom left corner. 2-2. Scotland won a penalty corner with 53 seconds on the clock. It looked certain to be the last chance of the game and McQuade, who threatened all night from penalty corners, smashed the ball into the net giving Scotland a dramatic late 3-2 victory.
