Day one at the women`s indoor national league and Clydesdale, Watsonians and Dundee Wanderers are victorious

It was an unfortunate start to the day`s proceedings at DISC on the opening day of the women`s indoor National League division 1 programme with the cancellation of the opening fixture between Dundee Wanderers and Edinburgh University, caused by the latter`s belated withdrawal from the competition. Consequently, also cancelled were Edinburgh University`s later matches against Clydesdale Western and Hillhead.

The consequence of this withdrawal is that there will be no automatic relegation although the side finishing seventh will still play the runners-up in the second division to secure the final spot in next season`s top flight.

And so to the action.

Uddingston had a positive start to their campaign with a 2-1 win over Hillhead, courtesy of a last gasp penalty corner strike from Kirsty Wratten. But it was Hillhead who were ahead at the interval when Jenny Sinclair converted from the spot only for Christie Porter to level for the Lanarkshire side four minutes into the second half.

Four goals from Scotland striker Sarah Jamieson gave Watsonians a solid start to the defence of their indoor title with a 6-2 win over Hillhead in the second game of the day. The champions were two up at the interval, both emanating from Jamieson.

Watsonians cruised to a five goal lead in the second half with goals from Tabitha Peck, Emily Dark at a penalty corner and Jamieson again for her hat-trick.  If it`s any consolation Hillhead won the final five minutes with goals from Lucy Langlands and captain Rachel Osborne and almost inevitably Jamieson pitched in with another.

There were also four goals for Dundee Wanderers` Amy Snelle as the Taysiders were 9-4 winners over Uddingston in game three. Wanderers certainly looked the part with a full squad of twelve players under coach Ben Gibson.

Wanderers hit the ground running with three goals in the opening eleven minutes, Snelle bagged a couple with Jess Martin getting the other. Anna McWilliams pulled one back from the spot for Uddingston but Jessica Ross restored the three goal lead by the break.

Goals from Christy Porter and Sophie signalled a possible come-back but the Taysiders put their foot on the gas and raced into a 9-3 lead through another two from Snelle, Ross again, Sam Sangster and Lucie Johnston before Rebecca Frain notched a late consolation for Uddingston.

Clydesdale Western also made a winning start to the campaign with a 6-2 win over Grange, but the victory was only assured in the second half. It was 2-2 at the interval, Siena Keijers and Iona Syme scored for the Edinburgh side while Lucy Williamson and Millie Steiger at a penalty corner replied. But Clydesdale donned their shooting boots in the second half with goals from Steiger and Williamson again along with Anna Hoolaghan and Margery Justice.

And so on to the final games of the day.

Watsonians completed the day`s double with a 3-0 win over Wildcats in their second outing. It was far from plain sailing as it was goalless after the first 20 minutes. But two minutes into the second half Catlin Hart at a penalty corner opened the champions` account. Then up popped Sarah Jamieson to confirm Watsonians superiority with an open play double, the second coming in the final minute of the contest.

Clydesdale also completed a double with a convincing eight goal win over Uddingston, playing their third game of the day. Clydesdale galloped into a four goal lead at the interval, Laura Paul opened in two minutes followed by another strike from Millie Steiger and a double from Jenny Eadie. The second half produced another four goals with Steiger scoring a couple for her hat-trick, Eadie found the net for her hat-trick, and Ava Graham completed the scoring.

In the final game of the day Wildcats clawed their way to a 3-1 win over Grange to gain their first points. There was only one goal in the first half courtesy of a brilliant solo effort from Wildcats` Mhairi McGregor. Wildcats advanced their tally after the break through Alex Stuart and Corrie Hay. Iona Syme scored for Grange with four minutes remaining but only a consolation.
