Cram hat-trick puts Clydesale Western in pole position
Milne Craig Clydesdale Western find themselves in a strong position to gain promotion from the EuroHockey Club Champions Challenge II after they recorded their second success of the competition today with an excellent 6-0 win against ASKÖ Hockeyclub Wels of Austria.
Neil Menzies’ side are now guaranteed a place in the promotion pool and will look to strengthen their position further when they take on SK Slavia Praha in their final Pool A match tomorrow (13.00 CET).
The Glasgow side broke the deadlock early in proceedings courtesy of an Anna-Mae Morton strike in the fifth minute to make it 1-0 before Scotland striker Holly Cram doubled her side’s lead to 2-0 from a penalty corner in the 11th minute. Cram then grabbed her second goal of the game in the 22nd minute to make it 3-0.
Shortly after the interval, Morton notched her second goal in the 38th minute to make it 4-0 and ten minutes later it was 5-0 when Gillian Green registered on the score-sheet in the 48th minute.
Cram rounded off the scoring two minutes later, securing her hat-trick in the process, to make the final scoreline 6-0.
Meanwhile, Grove Menzieshill’s promotion aspirations lie in the balance after a 1-1 draw against Belgian side Royal Wellington THC in their second match of the EuroHockey Club Champions Challenge I in Catania today.
Captain Ailsa Wyllie put the Scottish champions 1-0 up in the 27th minute from open play, but the Belgians equalised shortly after half-time through a 41st minute penalty corner strike from Jill Boon.
Charlotte Jones’ side now have to win against hosts HC Universitario Catania A.S.D. in their final Pool B match tomorrow (17.45 CET) and hope that Irish side UCD LHC can beat Royal Wellington if they are to have any chance of keeping their promotion challenge alive.
