Clydesdale Western upset Grove Menzieshill to win league title
Milne Craig Clydesdale Western were crowned champions of Aberdeen Asset Management Women’s National League Division 1 after a dramatic 4-3 win over Grove Menzieshill in today’s Grand Final at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.
Scotland captain Linda Clement opened the scoring for Grove Menzieshill inside the first minute, dispatching from close range to make it 1-0.
The veteran midfielder made it 2-0 in the 16th minute, this time finding space inside the circle to fire the ball down the centre of the goal.
However, Scotland striker Holly Cram pulled Clydesdale Western back into match ten minutes before half-time, finishing off from close range.
Right on the half-time hooter, the Titwood outfit were back on parity after Anna Mae Morton found an equaliser to make all square at 2-2.
Ten minutes into the second half, the defending champions were back in front, Ali Bell feeding Ailsa Wyllie inside the circle for the Scotland international to deflect the ball home to make it 3-2.
Sixty second later, Clydesdale Western were awarded a penalty corner and Cat Ralph stepped up to fire the ball home for yet another equaliser.
The winning goal came eight minutes from time, with Mae-Morton firing past Cath Rae to clinch the title for the Titwood team.
Hillhead Ladies will place in the top division next season after a 2-0 win over rivals AAM Merlins Gordonians.
After a tense, goalless first half, the Division 2 champions went ahead in the 44th minute following Wendy Andrews strike from the penalty corner.
Andrews then wrapped up promotion for the Glasgow side, rattling home another penalty corner right on the full-time hooter to finish the match as 2-0 winners.
GHK consolidated their place in Division 1 with a dominant 4-0 win over Grange EL.
Two goals from Sarah Jonstone inside the first twenty minutes put the Glasgow outfit 2-0 up, before penalty corner strikes from Jenny Morris and Kirsty O’Donnell just before half-time closed out the contest.
Elsewhere, Watsonians finished up in 5th place after a convincing 3-0 win over Glynhill Kelburne.
Cathryn Pollock gave the capital side the lead in the 10th minute before Kirsty Hill doubled their lead six minutes later from a penalty corner to make it 2-0.
A second half devoid of goals ensued, but Lucy Ramsey finally broke the deadlock, netting the third Watsonians goal in the 65th minute.
CALA Edinburgh finished seventh after a 3-2 win on running penalties against Western Wildcats.
Two goals from Kareena Marshall plus strikes from Rachel Houghton and Alex Stuart gave Wildcats their four goals, while Amber McNeill, Millie Brown, Charlotte Bascombe and Kerry-Anne Hastings got the goals for CALA Edinburgh.
