Clydesdale dark horses
Greaves Clydesdale proved to be dark horses as they put
a dent in Grange`s title aspirations by holding the Edinburgh side
to a surprise 1-1 draw in the Subway national
league.
The first half proved goalless with the best chances falling to
Grange`s Robbie Shepherdson and Pen Peterson of Clydesdale.
But ten minutes after the interval it was Clydesdale who took the
lead, indecision in the Grange`s defence gave the ball to Jonny
Roy, his initial shot was blocked by the keeper and teenager Ben
Peterson followed up to score. Grange recovered some of their
composure and Colin McIver sent a low shot under Stuart Brown for
the equaliser.
There were chances to clinch the points in the closing
exchanges, a reverse stick shot by Peterson went just wide of the
target while a similar strike by Grange`s Duncan Riddell suffered
the same fate.
No such problems for Glynhill Kelburne who are now in pole
position on their own after a nine goal defeat of Grove
Menzieshill. The Paisley outfit were three up at the interval
through a penalty corner by Mark Ralph along with strikes from Alan
Forsyth and Jonny Christie. The goal scoring continued
unabated in the second half, both Christie and Forsyth completed
their hat-tricks, Ralph scored another and Michael Christie
finished off the scoring.
Inverleith kept their unbeaten record with a narrow 3-2 win over
AMN Hillhead. Shane Boyce gave Hillhead an early lead but a
low penalty corner shot from Adam McKenzie restored parity by the
interval. Strikes by Andy Johnstone and another low set piece
goal from McKenzie put the Edinburgh side 3-1 ahead before a late
Hillhead consolation by Andy Hilton from the spot.
A hat-trick by Scott Sutherland was the catalyst in CALA
Edinburgh`s 4-2 victory over bottom side VWS Dundee
Wanderers. Ross Glashen opened for the Taysiders in only 40
seconds, but by the interval David Patterson and Sutherland from
the spot given CALA a 2-1 lead. In the second half Sutherland
made it 3-1 from a set piece only for James Weyers to pull one back
for the Dundonians. The points were sealed when Sutherland
completed his hat-trick with a penalty corner strike two minutes
from the end.
Western Wildcats were held to a 3-3 draw at Edinburgh University
– Joe Simpson, Scott McCartney from the spot and Ian Moodie were
the Wildcats` scorers.
In the women`s league, leaders Grove Menzieshill stay in pole
position with a 4-1 win over Edinburgh University, despite a
goalless first half and an opening strike by Sam Judge just after
the break.
Second placed VWS Dundee Wanderers kept their status with a
convincing 7-1 win over GHK. Vikki Bunce, Heather Elder
and Louise Sheriff gave Wanderers a three goal lead at the
interval. Within 90 seconds of the restart Amy Rowan and
Becky Ward had increased the tally to five, Rowan again made it six
and Rachel Russell completed the scoring in the closing
minutes.
Giffnock maintained their interest in the championship race with
a comfortable 4-0 win over Western Wildcats. Iona Steven
scored the only goal of the first half, but Giffnock clinched the
three points through further strikes by Louise Fleming, Rhona
Simpson and Steven again.
Despite dominating proceedings, some woeful finishing restricted
the score to 2-0 over bottom side Grange. Veteran Helen
Walker set up the opening in the first half and Holly Cram drove
the ball home. That scoreline remained until the
closing minutes when Catriona Ralph converted a penalty corner with
a direct strike to pick up the three points.
Kelburne`s game with CALA Edinburgh was postponed.
