Clydesdale cause an upset
SUBWAY INDOOR NATIONAL LEAGUE AT ROBERT GORDON`S IN
ABERDEEN
Second bottom Clydesdale have created the shock of the
season by beating league leaders VWS Dundee Wanderers 6-4,
and thrown the title race for the Subway indoor national league
into turmoil.
Despite the fact that Amy Rowan and keeper Carmin Dow did not
play, and once again Sam Sangster stepped into the breach between
the posts, Wanderers took a 3-0 lead through Rachael Osborne, Julie
Bryce and Ashley Bunce, but back came the Glasgow side with a
hat-trick from Ali Howie and one from Marjory Taylor to give
Clydesdale a 4-3 lead at the interval. In the second half
Nikki Lloyd and Howie again for her fourth goal sealed the victory,
although Becky Ward pulled one back with a deflection with four
minutes to go.
Earlier in the day Grove Menzieshill pulled level with a 2-0 win
over Milne Craig Western in the game of the day. Grove scored
in the first half, they were both carbon copy switches to Ali Bell
who finished off the penalty corners to put the Dundonians two
ahead at the interval. Western failed to threaten until
the closing eight minutes, Catriona Ralph`s high flick at a set
piece was saved by Nikki Cochrane, and then the Scottish
international keeper had to deal with another three penalty
corners, but the Glasgow side found no way through.
Western completed their day with a 1-0 win over Grove A, Kareena
Marshall notched a hat-trick while Catriona Ralph scored twice.
Grove had warmed up with a 9-2 victory over Granite City
Wanderers. The Aberdonians made some early running through
goals by Chloe Heron and Shiona Brough, but Grove held firm and ran
out comfortable winners, Linda Clement scored four, Bell got a
hat-trick and the others came from Louise Baxter and Leigh
Fawcett.
CALA Edinburgh made up some ground with a 4-0 win over Reid Kerr
College Kelburne, Emma Watson scoring twice, then they scored a
narrow 3-2 win over Clydesdale, internationalist Amy Brodie getting
the winner. The Edinburgh side then beat Granite City
Wanderers 8-2 in their final game.
It looks as if Grove`s second string will finish in bottom spot
after they went down 8-4 to relegation rivals Clydesdale, for whom
there were doubles from Nikki Lloyd, Ali Howie and veteran Wendy
Justice. They then lost 2-1 to Granite City Wanderers, their
scorers were Katie Hibbert and Morven Buss.
