Can Inverleith halt Kelburne’s unbeaten run?
A strong contender for the game of the day in the Subway
National League on Saturday would appear to be the clash between
Inverleith and league leaders Glynhill Hotel Kelburne.
Inverleith will be smarting over losing their unbeaten league
record when they lost out by the odd goal in an entertaining five
goal encounter with Western Wildcats.
A disappointed coach Stevie McCurry felt that his side had not
continued in the disciplined manner which had proved so effective
this season and will looking for a response from his players as
they face up to this challenging task.
On the other hand Kelburne remain on an impressive run which has
seen the reigning champions take a firm grip at the top. Manager
Harry Coles commented “We are looking at the game with Inverleith
as a vital one in terms of our title bid.”
After the 5-1 win over Edinburgh University last week Coles felt
that “We need to be more patient in our build up play combined with
an increased desire to be a bit more clinical in front of
goal.” However having broken the 50 goal mark already this
league season that is a worrying thought for the other teams.
(Forthbank – 11.30)
Grange who moved into second place after their win over CALA
Edinburgh travel to Glasgow to take on a AMN Hillhead still trying
to find last season’s level of performance. Hillhead coach Keith
Joss felt that “We created sufficient chances to win against Grove
Menzieshill last week but failed to take them.”
However Grange will be looking to put recent disappointing
results behind them as they look to close the five point gap on the
leaders and will look to captain Rob Barr and Cammie Fraser to
continue their recent goal scoring form.
Joss feels “The league is very competitive this year with all
the teams capable on their day of beating each other.” Hillhead
will be without goalkeeper Jamie Frail who is in Singapore lending
his support to his father, Jim, representing the Scotland Masters
Over45 team. However Joss was quick to point out that “Rory Kerr
proved to be an excellent replacement against Menzieshill.”
(Jordanhill School – 14.25)
Western Wildcats will be looking to consolidate on the form of
the past fortnight as they travel to face the bottom side VWS
Dundee Wanderers who have only one solitary point to their name so
far.
Wildcats will be hoping that the likes of Douglas Simpson, Scott
McCartney and Ian Moodie continue their goalscoring form of recent
weeks against a side who have displayed defensive frailties
except for the recent no scoring draw with Edinburgh
University.
(Riverside Park – 15.00)
The meeting of Grove Menzieshill and Greaves Clydesdale should
provide another interesting tussle. The Tayside club have so far
failed to reach the heights of last season but having secured an
important three points against Hillhead will go into this game with
renewed confidence.
Clydesdale coach Gordon Shepherd was unhappy with the concession
of three late goals in last week’s win over Wanderers and warned
his team “At this level, you cannot afford to get sloppy at the
back and give away cheap goals. Against the top teams, they
will take full advantage.”
Goals could be on the cards if both teams continue to show the
defensive weaknesses the “goals against”columns suggest.
(DISC – 13.00)
The final game features promoted CALA Edinburgh against an ever
improving Edinburgh University who showed enough last week against
Kelburne to suggest they are capable of causing upsets this season.
The top two clubs being the only teams to claim full points against
the students this season.
CALA have acquitted themselves very well on their return to the
top flight and have had a difficult last fortnight with fixtures
against the reigning champions Kelburne and Grange. The challenge
for the coach Neil Allan will be to restore confidence in this
talented young squad after this difficult run of fixtures.
(Meggatland – 15.30)
Once again there are no fixtures scheduled for the Women’s league
due to the Girls U16 and U18 Inter District Tournament
being held at Peffermill over the weekend.
