Caledonian Cougars play second fixtures at Futures Cup 2018
Day three of the Futures Cup 2018 saw the second round of fixtures for the Caledonian Cougars with each squad developing on their opening performance of the tournament.
U17G | Caledonian Cougars 5-1 Celtic Jaguars
Caledonian Cougars U17 Girls won their second match of the Futures Cup 2018 with a 5-1 victory over Celtic Jaguars, and booked a place in the 3rd/4th place play-off.
It was an excellent performance that could have brought more goals to reward the dominant possession the team enjoyed.
It was in the final minute of the opening quarter that the Caledonian Cougars broke the deadlock, and the goal came through Kirsten Cannon. It was a real striker’s goal with Cannon blasting the ball on the reverse stick into the net.
Early in the second quarter the Cougars extended their lead to 2-0 when Ruth Blaikie struck to round off a great team goal. The move started at the back and the Cougars swept forward to cut the Jaguars’ press open with one-two’s and great movement, before Blaikie carried the ball past a couple of defenders and smashed it into the bottom corner.
Just before half time it went to 3-0 when Georgia Crooks scored. Crooks was on hand in a goalmouth scramble to volley home after the ball bounced into the air off the goalkeeper.
In the final quarter the Cougars added to their tally with another two goals. First Zara Mason was on target then Sophie Hinds added a fifth. Mason’s strike came through some smart thinking from a free hit that led to Bronwyn Shields beating players out wide before laying the goal on a plate for Mason to finish off at the far post. Meanwhile Hinds showed quick hands to slide the ball past the keeper after some nice build up by Faith Joubert.
The Celtic Jaguars pulled one back late in the match through Lucy Oliver but it was the Caledonian Cougars who came away with the points in their second match of the Futures Cup 2018.
U15G | Saxon Tigers 5-0 Caledonian Cougars
Caledonian Cougars U15 Girls were defeated 5-0 by Saxon Tigers in their second match of the Futures Cup 2018.
The Cougars got off to a bad start in this game but found their feet, grew into the contest, and created some good chances to score.
It was a quick start to the contest by the Tigers and the first quarter saw them bag three goals to sail into a healthy lead.
Eloise Richards; Peggy Winterborn; and Maddie Axford were all on target to get the Tigers off to a great start.
Winterborn then bagged her second and her team’s fourth goal of the match early in the second quarter.
After this the Cougars battled back into the match and the third quarter saw them take charge, with a number of good saves denying them a goal. The best of the bunch fell for Ava Smith who prompted an excellent save from a reverse stick shot.
Despite some counter attacks in the final quarter the last goal of the match went to the Tigers. A penalty corner with five minutes of the match remaining saw Richards complete the scoring with her second goal of the match to make it 5-0.
U15B | Mercia Lynx 3-1 Caledonian Cougars
Caledonian Cougars U15 Boys lost their second game of the Futures Cup 2018 in a 3-1 defeat to Mercia Lynx.
It was a much improved performance by the Cougars who were unlucky to lose the match. The team enjoyed most of the possession, created many chances, and played some lovely hockey but some good goalkeeping and missed opportunities denied them something from the game.
The contest was exciting from the off and Ollie Wilson was impressive from the start. Wilson was denied a goal when he popped up at the far post to shoot goal ward but a good save prevented him from getting his name on the score sheet.
It was early in the second quarter that the game’s opening goal was scored, and it came from Lynx’s Gagandeep Hanspal.
Daniel Pearson had an outstanding game in midfield for the Cougars and was influential in an opportunity for Cameron Moran, but his turn and shot was well dealt with again by the goalkeeper.
Midway through the third quarter and Freddie Smith doubled the Lynx’s lead when he scored to make it 2-0.
The Cougars pulled one back right at the end of the third quarter and it came through a penalty corner rocket into the bottom corner by Euan Menzies.
Tobias Chan put a stop to the Cougars comeback in the final quarter when he scored to make it 3-1.
U17B | Wessex Leopards 4-2 Caledonian Cougars
Caledonian Cougars U17 Boys put in an excellent performance but lost to Wessex Leopards 4-2 in the Futures Cup 2018.
There was lots of positive attacking play by the Cougars, with many chances created, but they ended up on the wrong side of the score line.
After an even opening quarter it was Wessex Leopards who took the lead early in the second quarter when Tom Croft-Baker made it 1-0.
The Cougars response was instant however, and it was Jacob Tweedie who found the net within a minute of the opener to equalise. The ball was crashed into the D and Tweedie did very well to deflect the ball into the bottom corner of the goal.
On the cusp of half time the Leopards restored their lead and the goal came through Ollie Harper to make it 2-1.
The Cougars were playing some tremendous hockey with excellent performances throughout the squad, and by Andrew Lochrin; Ralph Weissen; and John Steven in particular.
Despite this it went to 3-1 in the third quarter when Nick Nurse capitalised on a penalty corner to strike home for the Leopards.
Again the Cougars response was swift and Tweedie swept home his second of the match to pull it back to 3-2. Struan Walker fired the ball into the D and Tweedie turned and blasted the ball into the top corner. It was a brilliant finish and a great goal.
Nurse then struck again as the end of the third quarter approached, making the score 4-2 while the Cougars were a man light following a green card.
