Bunce is the tormentor

INDOOR NATIONAL LEAGUE  –  WOMEN        STIRLING SPORTS VILLAGE
Dundee Wanderers` playmaker Vikki Bunce was the tormentor in the top of the table clash in the women`s indoor first division, she scored five goals and left the Grove defence chasing shadows as Wanderers defeated their city rivals Grove Menzieshill 8-3 to open up a three point gap at the half way stage in the competition.

Wanderers were 3-2 up at the interval, but on balance of play it was a fairly even contest.    It was the champions who took the lead in three minutes with a direct penalty corner strike by Louise Carroll.   Bunce then entered the fray with a florish, she stole the ball, marched into the circle and fired the ball home for the equaliser.   By 14 minutes Bunce had put her side 3-1 ahead for her first half hat-trick, then Grove pulled one back when a Ailsa Wyllie pass found Ali Bell who sunk the opportunity.

Two minutes into the second half Wanderers were 4-2 in front when Heather Elder pounced on a rebound off the Grove keeper Vicki Cochrane.  A few chances fell to Bunce to increase Wanderers` lead but her shots just eluded the target.    The game was back in the melting pot when Bell scored her second from the middle of the circle to bring the score back to 4-3.

But the Bell strike simply ignited the Wanderers squad into greater efforts and they scored four goals without reply in the closing eight minutes.   Becky Ward progressed all the way up the court and her cross was diverted home by Rachael Osborne for Wanderers` fifth.   Sam Sangster initiated a carbon copy move, this time her cross was fired into the net by Elder.

There was an unusual lapse in proceedings when a penalty corner shot by Bunce was illegally saved by the foot of Kat Cameron, but Sam Sangster`s fierce effort from the spot went high and wide of the target.

However, there was to be no respite for Grove, at another set piece Bunce`s initial shot was saved by Cochrane, but the striker latched on to the rebound, beat three defenders and finally fired the ball into the net for 7-3 to seal the contest.   The icing on the cake came in the final minute when Bunce scored her fifth with another vicious shot, and the Dundee derby went truly Wanderers` way, as did the crucial three points.

In their first game of the day Wanderers put nine past bottom side Glynhill Kelburne, Bunce notched another five in the goal avalanche, Jessica Ross scored a hat-trick and the opening goal came from Fiona Plain.

Wanderers finished the day with a 10-1 win over CALA Edinburgh, again Bunce was the catalyst with four goals, Rachael Osborne did the same, and the other goals came from Amanda Maxwell and Jess Ross, Lucy Lanigan got the consolation for CALA.

Grove also cruised to their opening 12-3 defeat of Inverleith, this time it was Ali Bell`s turn to claim a nap hand, Linda Clement got three and Ailsa Wyllie a further two.    Inverleith`s consolation strikes came from Sarah Jamieson (2) and Helen Campbell.

Grove recovered some of their composure in their final game of the day by seeing off Milne Craig Western 5-1, two goals from Ailsa Wyllie and another by Louise Campbell gave the Taysiders a three goal lead at the interval.   In the second half a double from Ali Bell secured the points, Susan McGilveray got the consolation for Western.

CALA started out with a 4-1 win over Granite City Wanderers, courtesy of a hat-trick of penalty corners from Amy Brodie, Kerry-Anne Hastings got the other.

The Edinburgh side moved into third place with a 7-4 win over Western, Angie Davie notched a hat-trick, Brodie got two and there were goals for Amy-Jane Russell and Amber McNeill.      Western`s only consolation came from a hat-trick by Helen Walker.

Wildcats continued their progress with a fighting 4-4 draw with Milne Craig Western, although it took a last gasp strike by Katy Devlin to snatch a share of the points.   Two set piece goals by Kaz Marshall was behind Wildcats` 2-1 half time lead, Morag McLellan replied for Western.   Marshall notched her hat-trick from another set piece strike, but three goals from Helen Walker put Western into a temporary 4-3 lead until Devlin`s late equaliser.

Wildcats then completed a 5-1 win over Inverleith, again Marshall was on target with another three goals, Rachel Houghton and Iona Gordon got the others.

Kelburne finally pulled themselves off the bottom spot with their first victory of the season, they beat Granite City Wanderers 8-2, the highlights were three goals from Amy Hislop and a double by Rachel Ewing.
