Brors on fire for Edinburgh University
MAX Brors (cor) has fired Edinburgh University to within touching
distance of a rare place in a national hockey final.
The highly-talented German forward has claimed six goals in four
matches since joining the team.
And the former Frankfurt player arrived at Peffermill thanks to a
little help from a friend.
Englishman Russell Garcia, a former head coach to Scotland’s men,
was the link between Brors and Graham Moodie, Edinburgh
University’s head coach.
Former Olympian Moodie, a former midfield star for Glasgow-based
Western, was delighted to accept the Germany under-21 training
squad member.
And the Edinburgh-based former Olympian said: “Bernhardt Peters, a
former German National team coach and World Cup winner in 2006, is
a friend of Max’s family and he asked Russell (Garcia) who to
contact in Scotland and he sent him our way. Lucky us.
“Max has been absolutely great. We lost 14 players last season,
seven from the starting 11.
“The guys worked really hard last season and we stayed in Division
One which was great.
“When we knew we were safe we then introduced some of our younger
players who were in our squad of 25 to give them a chance of
Division One play.
“This worked for us but we were always looking for a real finisher
and Max appeared.
“We’ve now got Ross Jamieson and Aidan McCrossan and Alfie Cary so
we can spell players up-front.
“However, Max has a real eye for goal. He scored three goals in two
pre-season games and scored two at Titwood against
Clydesdale.
“Then he scored the winner on Monday against Grange at Peffermill.
It was a reverse stick shot which flew into the bottom
corner.
“We created one chance in the second-half and he put it away. It is
great to have somebody like that and we now stand a chance of
making the final.”
Victory over Hillhead on Sunday at Mary Erskine School, Edinburgh
(12.30pm) could clinch the final berth and Moodie said: “The
Presidents Cup has been fantastic for us.
“We’re trying to get the team ready for the start of Division One
and to have competitive matches like this is tremendous.”
