Bronze medal for Inverleith at EuroHockey Indoor Club Challenge 1

Inverleith`s aspirations of latching on to a top two spot and promotion fell short in a 6-1 defeat at the hands of Swiss champions Rotweiss Wettingen in their final match at the EuroHockey Indoor Club Challenge 1 in Puconci.
However, the Edinburgh side rescued the consolation of third spot and the bronze medal after Portuguese side Casa Pia Atletico could only draw 4-4 with Rakovnik from the Czech Republic and remained a point behind Inverleith.
Coach Stuart Neave summed up the occasion in Puconci. “Whilst disappointed in the result in the final game I am very proud of how the players performed in the tournament. We put in a huge effort. Looking forward to the next indoor season and to be challenging again domestically.”
Needing to win the final game to have any chance of retaining aspirations of promotion the lifeline disappeared in the opening quarter with the Swiss rolling in three open play goals through Fabio Marelli (2) and Manuel Keller.
After that it was a mountain to climb for the Edinburgh side.
But a glimmer of hope appeared in the second quarter when the ever-reliable Alex Wilson sunk yet another penalty corner opportunity to bring the score back to 3-1.
The fairy tale comeback was not to be as Marelli piled in his own penalty corner chance not long after and the die was cast at 4-1 at the interval.
No further goals in the third quarter until Marelli scored another penalty corner for his own fourth of the game.
As the match was reaching its denouement, and the result was hardly in doubt, there was a bizarre series of circumstances which resulted in a flurry of visits to the sin bin – three Swiss, including hero Marelli, and one from Inverleith to be precise.
However, the Swiss were not distracted from their mission and Yves Morard added a sixth just on the final hooter.
