Big wins for Belgium and England at the youth Summer 4 Nations in Glasgow
England U16 Girls 7-2 Scotland Emerging Girls
Scotland Emerging Girls were defeated 7-2 by England U16 Girls in their third match of the Youth Summer 4 Nations at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.
It was a great start to the contest for Scotland as they emerged on the front foot in the opening stages.
The positive approach was rewarded with a goal. Ellie O’Conner swept the ball home at the far post after a lovely passing move down the right opened the England defence up. 1-0.
England burst into life after going one behind, and a succession of penalty corners was managed well by the Scotland defence.
In the final seconds of the quarter England pounced on an error and Phoebe Barnett spun and shot low into the Scotland net to equalise.
As the second quarter got underway, Morven Begg produced a sensational diving save to prevent Biba Mills after England carved Scotland open down the left.
Izzy Hogarth was proving to be a good outlet for Scotland, as she frequently took the ball forward down the left to relieve the pressure, while also looking dangerous on the counter.
Then Izzy Yonge punished Scotland on a counter of England’s own and slipped the ball into the bottom left corner to make it 2-1 to England.
It soon went to 3-1 courtesy of a penalty stroke, which Mills dispatched into the bottom left corner.
Right at the end of the half Scotland battled back into the contest when Hogarth pounced in the circle to lift the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net for 3-2.
The third quarter brought England goals. Half way through the third England restored its two-goal lead when Amelia Carter crashed a low shot into the goal from the right of the circle for 4-2.
Then Elena Baggett slipped into the circle on the left channel and fizzed a low effort past Maddie Shepherd for 5-2.
Early in the fourth Hogarth very nearly squeezed the ball home for Scotland but it trickled wide via the keeper’s elbow.
Scotland’s near miss was quickly followed by an England response and it was Carter who supplied it via a near post deflection. 6-2.
England’s hunt for goals saw them take off their keeper for an outfield player and it brought them a seventh goal with two minutes left to play, and complete the scoring at 7-2.
Belgium U16 Girls 3-0 Germany U16 Girls
Belgium U16 Girls earned a superb 3-0 win over Germany U16 Girls on day three of the Youth Summer 4 Nations at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.
Belgium made a great start to the contest and bagged the opening goal within the first five minutes of the game. A fantastic pass from the right wing was fizzed into the circle for Aricia Lepomme to convert and make it 1-0.
Belgium looked likely to score a second, and racked up a succession on penalty corners, but found themselves denied by good goalkeeping and close misses.
The Germans began to settle and look dangerous themselves, with Charlotte Rehmet showing some excellent stick skills, but the quarter would end with Belgium ahead.
In the second quarter Germany asked questions of the Belgian defence and found an answer in goalkeeper Celine Deprez. First Clara Von Falck blasted goal-ward only to be blocked by the leg guards of the keeper, before a goal-bound drag flick by Franziska Pabsch was saved by the outstretched leg of Deprez.
Into the second half and Germany thought they’d bagged an equaliser but were thwarted when Katharina Seifert cracked the ball against the crossbar after a sublime passing move through the Belgium defence.
With 30 seconds of the third quarter remaining Belgium bagged a second when Emma Herzeele forced the ball home on the rebound to make it 2-0.
In the final quarter Belgium went three ahead with a goal out of nowhere. Emilie Verhees chased down a ball on the left, and under pressure fired it across goal for Maylin Balon-Perin to deflect into the net from what looked like an impossible angle. 3-0.
Germany was awarded a stroke as the game neared its conclusion but Deprez saved superbly at the bottom left corner to retain their clean sheet, and the game ended 3-0 to Belgium.
