Big results in today’s premiership as Watsonians march on but Western falter

Wildcats` coach Kaz Cuthbert said that there was a buzz about the squad this season and she was right as she watched her pack defeat second placed Clydesdale Western 1-0 at Titwood in the women`s Premiership match of the day.

The former Scotland captain said: “This was a real dominant performance from Wildcats from start to finish and Lucy Findlay was instrumental in our midfield today.”

The first half ended goalless but only a goal line save by a Clydesdale defender and the bar prevented Wildcats from taking the lead. However, the crucial goal came in the third quarter with a strike from former Scotland internationalist Becky Ward and that is how the score line stood at the final whistle. As a result Wildcats move up into the second top spot alongside Clydesdale, GHK and Edinburgh University.

Watsonians put Gordonians to the sword with a 15-0 victory and are well in front at the top of the table. There were hat-tricks for Ellie Stott and Heather Tait, Katherine Holdgate, Katie Crawford and Millie Berndes-Cade scored two and the others came from Ellie Wilson, Emily Dark and Ophelie Marien.

GHK`s bubble burst following an 8-0 defeat by Edinburgh University, Ava Findlay scored twice while the others came from Georgie Jones, Louise Campbell, Eve Pearson, Hanna McKie, Amy Brodie and finally Jika Nyirenda.

Scottish Premier Division hockey – GHK v Edinburgh University

Hillhead kept their place in the top six with a 3-1 win over Glasgow University. Emma Blackstock opened in the first quarter after Wendy Andrews had taken the ball around the keeper, then Andrews herself added a second from a penalty corner. Just before the interval Blackstock added another when she converted a pass from Olivia Robertson, the students got a consolation in the second half.

Meanwhile, Grange got their first three points of the season with a 3-1 win over pointless Dundee Wanderers, Rebecca Gordon got two and the other came from a rocket by Skye Waugh, Sam Sangster got a late consolation for the Taysiders.

Finally, Uddingston got their first points of the season with an away 4-2 win at Inverleith. There were two goals for Caterina Nelli while Amber Wade and Lucy Hogarth got the others. Inverleith’s replies came from Jennifer Veitch at a penalty corner and Iona Armour.

Grange certainly upset the applecart in the men`s Premiership with a 5-1 home win over champions Western – and they did it in some style. This was Western`s first defeat in well over a season and brings an end to a very impressive victorious run.

The result is that Grange sit resplendent at the top of the table, two points ahead of the chasing pack while Western drop down to fourth.

Rory McCann opened the scoring for Grange with a back post strike and that was doubled by David Nairn – and that was the score at the interval.

Andrew McConnell pulled one back for Western from the spot but any comeback was stifled by further Grange goals from McCann again and Aidan McQuade at a penalty corner in the third quarter. Fraser Heigh completed the Grange tally in the final quarter.

Western coach Vishal Marwaha said: “Grange took their chances, we were not quite at it, we were tired and flat – but I`m not making any excuses Grange deserved to win. We ended up chasing the game and that gave Grange further chances to add to their score.”

Edinburgh University slipped into the second spot following a 15 goal thriller against FMGM Monarchs in Dundee – in fact the students scored eleven of them. There were two goals each for Keir Robb, Costa Stylianou and Scott Lindsay, and the others came from Robbie and Jamie Croll, Ritchie McCluskey, Hamish Imrie and Iain McFadden.

Clydesdale are on the same points mark as the students in third place on goal difference after a 6-0 win over newly promoted ESM. Here there were two goals each for Euan Anderson and Jamie Green with Euan Lindsay and Andrew McAllan getting the others.

Watsonians are only a point behind after a 2-0 win over Edinburgh neighbours Inverleith. The opening goal came when Andrew Fraser Harris cleverly lifted the ball over the keeper. That`s how the score stood until late on when Sam Knight finished off a one on one to seal the three points.

Inverleith captain Ed Iffla said: “It was disappointing to lose a game we largely dominated. We were wasteful of the chances we did create and credit to Watsonians who took theirs.”

Scottish Premier Division hockey – Hillhead v Kelburne

Hillhead propelled themselves towards the top six with a 3-1 win over Kelburne at Upper Windyedge. Yan Adams charges were one up after only five minutes when Matt Carder opened with a point blank reverse stick shot. Andrew Sinclair added a second even before the end of the first quarter. A sweep into the far corner of the net after good turnover play by Marcus MacIntyre-Kemp sealed the three points. Kelburne got their consolation in the final five minutes through Hector Hall.

Finally Uddingston emerged from the lower rungs with a 9-5 win over Dunfermline Carnegie. The highlight was a hat-trick of penalty corners from Jedd Campbell, Mateusz Stotko scored twice and the rest came from 14-year-old Ben Young, Stephen Mackenzie, Finn Halliday and Graham Haxton. It`s not often you score four goals and comfortably lose the contest, but that was the fate of the Fifers for whom Gary Clark got two and Andrew Doyle, Magnus Ferrier and Iain Bruce also scored.
