Big performance by Scotland U18 Boys despite loss to Germany
Scotland U18 Boys put in an impressive performance against Germany but were beaten 2-0 by the tournament hosts at the U18 EuroHockey Championships in Krefeld.
In the opening quarter Germany threatened the Scotland defence with three penalty corner routines, but the Scots dealt with them well and survived unscathed.
Just as the first quarter was reaching a conclusion, thunder and lightning called a halt to the game and the match was suspended.
After a break of nearly an hour the match got underway. Then, just as half time approached, Germany took the lead from the penalty spot. A stroke was awarded and Lukas Kossel converted to make it 1-0.
Callum Douglas in goal for Scotland made a number of excellent saves as Germany went searching for a second goal, but there would be no further goals in the first half.
Douglas produced more heroics in goal in the second half, backing up a strong resolute defence who battled for every ball.
It took an exceptional goal open the defence and beat the in-form Douglas. An aerial ball into Scotland’s circle was brought down well, and zipped home from the left of goal by Ben Hasbach to make it 2-1.
In the final quarter an excellent Scotland attack won a penalty corner. The resulting drag flick was saved, but Scottish shirts piled in for the rebound only for the ball to be scrambled clear off the line.
Another outstanding save in the closing seconds saw Douglas bat the ball over the bar from a close range effort and keep the score at 2-0 at full time.
