A win and a loss for Inverleith on day one of Men’s Indoor Club Challenge I

Inverleith finished the day with a great victory over Case Pia Atletico Clube after a defeat earlier in the day to Rakovnik.

INVERLEITH 2 1972 RAKOVNIK (CZECH REPUBLIC) 7

Not perhaps the start that Inverleith coach Stuart Neave was looking for as his charges went down 7-2 to Czech champions 1972 Rakovnik in the opening match at the EuroHockey Indoor Club Challenge 1 in Slovenia.

The Czechs build up a solid two goal lead at the interval through penalty corner strikes from Martin Seemann and Stepan Klaban.

Then up stepped Petr Prochazka to increase the Czechs lead with an open play double. However, towards the end of the third quarter a glimmer of hope with a penalty corner conversion by Inverleith`s Alex Wilson.

But there was to be no respite as Prochazka completed his hat-trick and Tran Thang Duong made it 6-1 at a penalty corner.

Patrick Christie pulled another back for the Scots at another set piece in the final quarter but soon after Seemann scored his own second to complete the scoring for Rakovnik.

Coach Stuart Neave admitted: “We made too many mistakes and not at the standard I expect. Rakovnik are a good side and punished us. We need to improve for the next game.”

INVERLEITH 5 CASA PIA ATLETICO CLUBE (PORTUGAL) 3

Inverleith responded to Neave`s coaxing with a spirited 5-3 win over Portuguese champions Casa Pia Atletico.

However, the Scots were soon on the back foot when Rodrigo Castro and Joao Penetra put them two up in the opening six minutes.

But back came the Scots in dramatic style, a double from Kyle Taylor from a penalty corner and then open play inside a minute restored parity. And with a minute to go before the interval Alex Wilson put Inverleith ahead for the first time at another penalty corner for a 3-2 lead.

No sooner had the second half started than Inverleith scored again, it was Wilson again at another penalty corner and that is how the score stood at the end of the third quarter.

However, another open play strike by Taylor mid-way through the final quarter settled the nerves and put Inverleith 5-2 in front. Canos Silva got one back for the Portuguese but little more than a consolation.

Tomorrow Inverleith will take on Raca from Slovakia and the Slovenian champions Triglav Predanovci to continue their promotion drive.
