A Scottish Cup Sunday goal-fest
Sunday was a day of conflicting scenarios – some cup ties were played – some were not for a variety of reasons – some provided large scores – and some were close to call…and that is how it went.
So how did the Premiership clubs do in the first round of the Scottish Cup in a post Storm Amy environment?
In the men`s competition Inverleith started off by blowing away Strathclyde University in a 9-1 score. And Tyler Stagg was top with four goals while the others came from captain Kyle Taylor; Thomas Temperley; Ben Turtle; Thomas Barton and Zak Turtle.
And then there were two very close ties. Hillhead, in the lower echelons of the Premiership were 3-2 winners over Kelburne who are close to the top of the second tier. Matthew Dodson, Murray Ross and Fraser Ward were on target for the winners.
It was even closer in Lanarkshire where ESM Lions triumphed over hosts Uddingston, but only 6-5 on penalties. Louis Gardiner scored twice and Anup Valmiki the other for the home side while Cameron Ede with a brace and Elliot Sandison were the Lions` scorers in normal time.
In the women`s competition there were some large scores on offer.
At Titwood Clydesdale Western were 11-2 winners over Uddingston in an all-Premiership clash – here Sophie Hinds scored a hat-trick, there were two each for Jenny Eadie, Ava Graham and Jika Nyirenda, and Emma McGregor and Millie Steiger got the others.
Grange were 18-0 winners at Grove Menzieshill with Rachel Shiel getting six, Molly Davis a hat-trick while Jen Cain and Alex Massey got two each…the rest were singles.
Watsonians topped the tally with twenty against Clydesdale Western`s third string, top of the list came Sarah Jamieson with nine and there were hat-tricks for Tabitha Peck and Jenna Park.
In the other ties Grange 2s were 4-1 winners over Stirling Wanderers, Clydesdale Western`s second string scored eight against Falkirk & Linlithgow, Edinburgh Hockey Club beat ESM 2s 6-2 and finally the second strings of Watsonians and Edinburgh University ended in a 2-2 draw.
