A Campbell double sinks Austria in Aleksin
EUROPEAN JUNIOR NATIONS CHAMPIONSHIPS 11 – ALEKSIN
(RUSSIA) – 15-21 JULY 2012
SCOTLAND 2 AUSTRIA 0
Two goals in seven minutes early in the second half by
Grove Menzieshill striker Louise Campbell gave Scotland`s women a
comfortable 2-0 win over Austria today in the third pool match at
the European under 21 Nations Championships 11 in Aleksin,
Russia.
In the style of other Eastern European sides,
the Austrians played a packed defence tactic in order to frustrate
the Scots, and consequently no chances were created in the opening
exchanges. The Scots won their first penalty corner in 17
minutes through the efforts of Lucy Lanigan and Ali Howie, but the
ball was stolen at the set piece before a shot could be
released. The first scoring opportunities fell to Jenny
Morris, the GHK youngster had two shots in as many minutes but on
both occasions the Austrian goalkeeper was on hand to block her
efforts. Robyn Collins then had a chance at a penalty corner
but her shot was also saved by the goalkeeper.
The Austrians were barely an attacking force in the match, but
very much against the run of play they won their sole penalty
corner and the resulting shot was brilliantly saved on the line by
defender Kirsten McIntosh to keep the goal in tact.
After a goalless first half, the Scots took the lead four
minutes after the interval, Howie on the right fed the ball on to
Bethan Mann whose hard hit into the circle came back off the
goalkeeper and Campbell was on hand to roll the ball under the
prostrate Austrian. It was now constant Scottish pressure and
a hard cross from Alex Wilson just eluded the outstretched stick of
Hazel Hall.
The result was sealed in 46 minutes, a line ball from Fiona
Bruce found Sarah Robertson at the top of the circle, the Edinburgh
University striker eluded two defenders only for her resulting shot
to be saved by the goalkeeper, but Campbell was again in the right
place to slot the rebound home. The Scots finished well
on top, Howie had the best chance to increase the lead but her
effort flew narrowly past the post, while Scotland`s keeper Siobhan
Cowie, playing her first game in the tournament, failed to touch
the ball at all in the second half.
“This was a much more positive display, we kept our discipline
better, and created a host of chances in the Austrian circle, but
we still need to be more clinical to turn pressure into goals,”
said Dave Stott, Scotland`s coach.
