A big result or two in the Scottish Cup
The all-premier women`s Scottish Cup ties produced results that somewhat defied the current trend in the league.
Holders Edinburgh University were dumped out of the competition in some style by Grange with an emphatic 5-1 score line. And the Edinburgh students sit at the top of the Premiership. Heather Croll was top with a double and Grange`s other strikes emanated from Rachel Shiel, Izzy Alexander and Eve Downie. Cat Nelli got the students consolation.
And as if that was not enough, Watsonians were dumped out of the competition by a revitalised GHK side in a penalty shoot-out. In normal time Fiona Burnet put the Edinburgh side a goal up in the second quarter and the feeling was that a regular win for Watsonians was to follow considering their dominance. But not so, with seven minutes to go Jo Boyle scored an equaliser and the game ended 1-1 in normal time.
The penalty shoot-out continued unabated until 5-5, but then Lucy Williamson scored to give GHK a ticket into the next round. An attention-grabber maybe, but it`s only another chapter in GHK`s recovery from a slow start to the league season.
However, special mention must be made of GHK keeper Ali Westwood who made a series of crucial saves to frustrate Watsonians and the accolade from her colleagues was “she was fantastic.”
But that is what the Scottish Cup is all about.
Orkney Ladies came to Inverness as a half-way venue and were rewarded with a 2-0 win over ESM.
In perhaps the top game of the men`s Scottish Cup Edinburgh University travelled to Auchenhowie to take on Western Wildcats and came away with a 3-2 win and a place in the next round. And what was the catalyst – surprise, surprise a hat-trick from Jamie Golden. Wildcats replies came from Iain McFadden and Fraser Moran but not enough to rescue the tie, and it is Edinburgh who progress to the next round draw.
In Edinburgh Grange gained some revenge for yesterday`s league defeat to ESM Lion by scoring a single victory over the same side in today`s cup. The only goal of the game came in seven minutes with a good run and cross from David Nairn which was touched into the net by Jacob Tweedie. Both sides had their chances but no further goals were added. The Lions applied a lot of pressure in the final quarter but Grange held out to progress to the quarter-final draw.
Hillhead travelled to Tayside on cup business and came away with a tough 3-2 win and progression to the next round. The visitors seemed to have the tie in hand with a 3-1 lead, the goals coming from Euan Menzies with a reverse shot, Matt Carder with an overhead hit from behind his head, and finally Fraser Ward from the spot. Then Wanderers reduced the score line to 3-2 with four minutes left, but the Glasgow side held on. Wanderers` goals came from Oscar Brown and Sean Dowie.
It has been a good weekend for Clydesdale, yesterday they picked up their first Premiership points, and today avoided a slip in a banana skin cup tie against second tier leaders Dunfermline Carnegie in Fife with a 5-2 win. There were individual scorers in Joel Reid, Andy McAllan, Euan Lindsay, Euan Anderson and Kyle Bannerman.
Watsonians avoided any hangover from Saturday`s defeat by Uddingston with a 14 goal victory over Stirling Wanderers, Tommy Orr scored a hat-trick and there were two goals each for Ollu Magowan and Gabe Tenner, the rest were individual strikes.
In one other tie Glasgow University were 7-3 winners over Granite City Wanderers.
