Scotland men draw with Wales in Cardiff
A 3-3 draw in Cardiff saw Scotland men get their World Cup Qualifier preparations off to a competitive start against Wales.
The home side got off to a good start in the contest as a Scotland team welcoming players onto the pitch in national colours for the first time, while reintegrating experienced players, settled into the game. The Scots experimented with three new presses as they found their feet in the opening stages.
It would be Wales to score first and the goal came courtesy of a flick from a penalty corner to make it 1-1.
Scotland started the second quarter well with a greater intensity than the opener, but a turnover in midfield allowed Wales to break forward and finish well for 2-0
The Scottish spirit wasn’t dampened and in the second half the Blue Sticks came fighting back. A great break forward that saw Ali Douglas combine with the Golden brothers, Jamie and Cammy, was finished off by AJ Lochrin sliding in at the far post to pull it back to 2-1.
A deserved equaliser soon arrived when Struan Walker slotted the ball across the goalkeeper to make it 2-2.
The third quarter was an even affair with the game swinging from end-to-end. Scotland went 3-2 ahead through a wonder strike by Ali Douglas after he beat two players and fired a strike on the reverse into the top corner.
The contest ended in a draw after Wales found the net with a late penalty corner to make it 3-3. The teams meet again tomorrow in Cardiff at noon.
Interim Head Coach Neil Allan said, “It was a fair result. It was a really good exercise for us bringing in three new presses and finding our feet with that. It was great to bring some new players into the squad for their first game, as well as bringing back some players. We have a lot of positives to take from the match; it was a nice warm up for us and a good start. We’re looking forward to the next game.”
