Valencia test series finishes with Scotland women drawing with Spain

Spain 1-1 Scotland

Scotland women drew 1-1 with world number five Spain in the final game of a three-match test series in Valencia. The result follows a 1-1 draw in the opening match and a 5-2 win for Spain in the second match, giving Scotland excellent preparation for the upcoming World Cup qualifier tournament in India.

A really good game of hockey saw Scotland enjoy a bright start with a good press, putting the home side under pressure. The opening quarter ended goalless but the Scots fashioned some opportunities to test the Spanish defence.

In the second quarter Scotland’s good press continued but Spain took the lead after the Scots lost the ball inside their own 25, and Spain made in-roads to the Scottish circle. Lucy Harris made a good double save but couldn’t stop the third rebound as Spain went 1-0 ahead.

Scotland responded to the goal showing excellent composure and took the game forward. They were rewarded when Ellie Mackenzie found the net for 1-1. Mackenzie attacked down the left side, eliminated three players, and struck a band hand effort into the net to equalise in the third quarter.

The final quarter saw Scotland push for a winner and they nearly got it when Fiona Burnet hit the post. A following penalty corner effort fizzed just wide before another corner routine prompted a sensational double save to deny the Scots the win.

Head Coach Chris Duncan said, “From our perspective it’s been a really pleasing trip. Spain and world number five and they’re one of the best teams in the world for a reason. To be competitive in these games has been a big bonus for us in terms of our preparation for the World Cup qualifiers. It shows were capable of getting results against teams of that quality and this is a really good thing. A special mention to Lucy Harris who represented Scotland for the first time at senior level and did very well in goal.”
