ALMOST ALL SEMI-FINAL PLACES DECIDED IN THE WOMEN`S INDOOR DIVISION 1

After Sunday`s outings in Pool A it is clear that Clydesdale Western and Inverleith have qualified for the semi-finals, while in Pool B Watsonians look to join them but it could be an interesting struggle between Wildcats and GHK who takes the final spot, they are both on nine points with one game to play.

In the relegation issue Grange will certainly contest the play-offs but from the other pool it looks to be between Hillhead and Dundee Wanderers.

POOL A

Azets Clydesdale Western moved relentlessly towards finishing top of Pool A with a 2-0 win over second placed Inverleith and opened up a six point cushion with only two games remaining.   Hardly a torrent of goals here – Fran Lonergan opened in the first half to be followed by Anna Hoolaghan in the second…both at penalty corners.   The result leaves Inverleith with a bit to do, they are now only three points ahead of Hillhead and Dundee Wanderers who they have still to play.

In the second match of the day Hillhead suddenly came to life and moved off the bottom after a narrow 5-4 win over Dundee Wanderers.  The foundation of their victory came with a 4-1 lead at half-time, goals came from Alex Burden, Teresa Munio Fernandez, Morna Sinclair and Ciara Goddard with Sam Sangster replying for the Taysiders.  Hillhead`s tally increased to five early in the second half through Rosalind Gayfer.   However, by 31 minutes Wanderers had rammed in three penalty corners with a double for Sangster for her hat-trick and Amy Snelle, but that is where the comeback ended and the points vanished.

Not a good day for Wanderers as they succumbed 5-2 to a revitalised Inverleith side in their second outing and now share bottom spot with Hillhead.  Inverleith, however, have consolidated second spot in the pool and a semi-final spot.   The Edinburgh side marched into a three goal lead through a couple from Jenn Tait and another by Steph Bain.   Jess Martin pulled one back for the Taysiders but Inverleith advanced their cause further with goals from Bopi Monte and Bain again.  Mairi McAdam did pull another back for Wanderers but far from enough.

Clydesdale galloped to the top of the pool in some style with an 8-1 win over Hillhead who remain bottom on goal difference from Wanderers.  The procession of goals was topped by doubles from Lucy Williamson and Jika Nyirenda while the others came from Jika Nyirenda, Marjorie Justice, Fiona Semple, Anna Hoolaghan and Sophie Hinds

POOL B

A bit of an upset in the opening game in Pool B in which Wildcats emerged 3-2 winners over champions Watsonians, and the result leaves both teams resting on nine points with the latter having a slightly better goal difference.  In only six minutes the Cats moved into a two goal lead with goals from Olivia Finch and Kate Holmes.   Although Ailsa Small pulled one back for Watsonians, just before the interval Corrie Hay restored the Cats two goal advantage.   There was only one goal in the second half, scored by Watsonians` Tabitha Peck, but the champions were not able to get back to parity. It was not all smiles from the Cats however as goal scorer Olivia Finch got an elbow to the nose.

GHK certainly returned to form with an eight goal win over Grange and thereby move to within three points of Wildcats and Watsonians in the group table.  It was four at the interval through Robin Robeson, Carly Bisset, Tamilla Matchett and Emma Tennant.   Another four in the second half with the same players adding to their tally.

Watsonians remain at the top of Pool B after finding their shooting sticks and beating Grange 9-2 leaving them rooted at the foot of the pool table.  Top scorers for Watsonians were Ailsa Small and Emily Dark with hat-tricks, there were two goals for Milly Berndes-Cade while Tabitha Peck picked up a single, Lucy Pillinwood and Hannah Coull provided the replies.for Grange.

In the final analysis it was a good day out for a rejuvenated GHK completed the day`s double with a 2-1 win over Wildcats to tie the teams on nine points, the latter have a slender goal difference advantage.   Tamilla Matchett set the tone with the opening goal in twelve minutes…and that is how it stood at the break.  And that is how it stood until four minutes left when Alex Stuart levelled for the Cats at a penalty corner…and a draw looked the final outcome.   But no, GHK were not to be denied and Robin Robeson got a belated winner and the three valuable points, and a possible semi-final spot.

After doing so well to defeat Watsonians it was a disappointing end to the day for Wildcats to lose out to GHK.
