No change at the top of the women`s indoor division 1

There is little change at the top of the women`s indoor division 1, in particular Clydesdale Western are still in pole position after continuing their unbeaten run. With three games Watsonians have caught up and lie in second spot three points adrift with Wildcats in third a further three points behind.  Elsewhere, Inverleith and Dundee Wanderers both lie a bit behind on nine points, but goal difference pushes the former into fourth.   GHK, Grange and Hillhead lie in the lower echelons.

Clydesdale Western continued their unbeaten run at the top of the women`s indoor division 1 with a 6-0 win over Hillhead.   In a rather bizarre outcome Clydesdale scored all six in the opening 14 minutes with two goals each for Lucy Williamson and Sophie Hinds along with singles from Anna Hoolaghan and Ava Graham…and just when a substantial total looked to be on the cards, suddenly the goals dried up completely and that is how the contest finished.

Clydesdale were 6-2 winners over Inverleith in their second outing of the day. They were 4-1 up at the break with two goals from player/coach Fiona Semple and others from Ava Graham and Sophie Hinds, Bopi Monte replied for the Edinburgh side.   Monte scored again early in the second half to bring the score back to 4-2, but a double from Lucy Williamson secured the points for the league leaders.

Watsonians started their bid to keep up with leaders Clydesdale Western with a 4-1 win over Grange.   It was only an Ailsa Small goal for the champions that separated the sides at the break.  Watsonians advanced their tally to three in the second half through Small again and Ellie Wilson.  Kirsten Turnbull got one for Grange but Milly Berndes-Cade settled the issue with a fourth in the closing minutes.

The champions kept up the pressure at the top with a comfortable seven goal win over GHK.    It took nine minutes for Watsonians to score with a penalty corner from Emily Dark followed by an open play strike by Tabitha Peck.   After the break the Edinburgh side fired in five goals in an eight minute spell – Katie Crawford got a double, Dark and Peck scored again, and the other came from Ailsa Small.

A nine goal victory for Watsonians over Hillhead pulled them to within three points of Clydesdale in the final game of the day, and the goals came from a hat-trick by Emily Dark and two goals each for Milly Berndes-Cade, Katie Crawford and Katie Stott.

Wildcats made progress up to 12 points, retaining third spot, with a 3-0 win over GHK who drop down to the lower tier.   The Cats were two up at half-time with goals from Alex Stuart and Emma Blackstock at a penalty corner.   And that is how the match stood until four minutes from the end when Stuart added a third…and the three points.

The Cats completed a good run of form with an 8-1 win over Grange in their second match.  It didn`t look too promising when Kirsten Turnbull opened for Grange in three minutes, but that was the end of their resistance.  By the interval the Cats were 3-1 up with a double from Corrie Hay and another by Lucy Macmillan.   The goals flowed in the second half, Macmillan scored twice for her hat-trick, Rachel Osborne also got a couple with Olivia Finch finishing off the scoring.   It has been a good run from the Wildcats to make third place their own.

In the race to progress up the table Dundee Wanderers made the first move in the opening game of the day with a 5-3 win over bottom side Hillhead.   The Taysiders were 3-1 up at the interval, Sam Sangster fired home two penalty corner chances and Jess Martin got the other from the spot, Rosalind Bayfer replied for Hillhead.   Wanderers then advanced their score to 5-1 through Martin again and captain Mairi McAdam before Alex Burden and Orla Millar got a couple of late consolations for Hillhead.

However, Wanderers` second outing of the day was less successful, they succumbed 5-4 to Inverleith who now join the Taysiders on nine points.  It was looking good for Wanderers when Jess Martin and Sam Sangster both converted penalty corners for a two goal lead.  But early in the second half they were hit by a barrage of four goals from the Edinburgh side, Bopi Monte got two while Jenn Tait and Steph Bain were also on target for a 4-2 transformation.  In the closing couple of minutes Mairi McAdam pulled one back for Wanderers, Monte got her hat-trick for Inverleith and Sangster converted another penalty corner, but too late as Inverleith emerged close 5-4 winners.
