Western Wildcats move up to second in the men`s Premiership
In the only game of the day Western Wildcats men travelled to Fettes to take on Grange and came away with a comprehensive 5-1 victory.
The result pushes the Wildcats a point ahead of Watsonians and only two behind top-placed Edinburgh University and with an outstanding fixture against Grove Menzieshill still to come. So the Wildcats could still finish king of the jungle prior to the winter break. The reversal meant little to Grange as their place in the top six was already secured.
Western were three up at the interval, Fraser Moran opened with a lift over the keeper in ten minutes, in the second quarter a penalty corner was twice saved but in the ensuing scramble Nikki Homfray finished off, and then Cameron Banks deflected a cross from the right into the net just before the break.
A moment for Grange five minutes into the second half, in a scramble in the circle Livio Belotti put the finishing touch for 3-1. However, Wildcats were not deterred and Homfray finished off a break down the left for Wildcats` fourth. Then, as Grange pressed to get back into the contest they were caught in a Wildcats breakaway and Fraser Moran added a fifth.
The crucial women`s Premiership match between Glasgow University and Wildcats, due last Thursday evening, fell victim to the cold and frost…and so the composition of the top six still remains to be resolved.
At present Wildcats are three points adrift of Grange in sixth, but with a better goal difference. So three points from their outstanding fixture against Glasgow would leapfrog them into that coveted sixth spot…but the Cats need to win. But that`s now for another day.
