Stunning scores in Premiership on opening day
Western Wildcats’ Fraser Moran started off the season in some style – he picked up a hat-trick in the opening quarter in an 8-1 mauling of Uddingston at Auchenhowie He fired in two penalty corners and one from the spot although Jedd Campbell did reply for Uddy, also from a penalty corner.
The score advanced to 4-1 by the interval with a close range tap in from Adam Mackenzie.
The goals continued to flow in the second half, Mackenzie scored again when he slapped home a rebound, Rob Harwood added a sixth from close in, to be followed by Andrew McAllister. Perhaps the best was left to the last minute with a spectacular diving deflection from Harwood to round off the event.
So a strong early performance from the defending men’s champions – ominous news for the other title aspirants.
Perhaps just as ominous was Watsonians 7-1 victory over Grove Menzieshill on Tayside. Here new signings Adam Carter and Charlie Jack made an immediate impact with two goals each, the others came from Guy Rowson, Matthew Leiper and Danny Cain . Brian McGarrity sent a deflection high into the net for the Dundonians reply.
And what a start for Watsonians new coach Sam Judge – this was her baptism in charge, perhaps a sign of things to come!
Other likely title contenders Grange were also winners on the day – but only just. The contest at Titwood was the traditional game of two halves. Clydesdale galloped into a two goal lead at the interval through Thomas McInroy and Liam King. But Grange stepped it up in the second half and drew level with a penalty corner strike from Robbie Croll and another by Jacob Tweedie.
As the game seemed to be heading to a 2-2 draw, and with 20 seconds left, there came a brotherly intervention. David Nairn, playing for Grange, was fouled in the circle by brother Jack, playing for Clydesdale, David then dusted himself down and converted from the spot for the belated winner.
Inverleith were also first day winners, they beat Dundee Wanderers by the odd goal in seven – scorers were Jordan Wright, Zak and Ben Turtle and Tyler Stagg. Inverleith captain Kyle Taylor said: “Great to get the three points to start the season. Was a brilliant shift from the lads.”
ESM Lions went to Hillhead and came away with the three points with a 3-1 score. Cameron Ede, Jamie Hogarth and Rich McCorkell were on target for the victors while Euan Menzies replied for Hillhead.
In the game-of-the-day in the women`s competition Clydesdale Western set out their stall for the season with an emphatic five goal victory over GHK at Titwood. There were five individual scorers – Jenny Eadie, Heather Howie, Bronwyn Shields, new signing Jika Nyirenda and Ciara Forgie. That might give the other sides something to think about!
Wildcats were also decisive winners at Auchenhowie – they put six past Inverleith. The quickest goal of the day, inside 25 seconds youngster Chloe Hardie had the ball in the net…and on her debut! By half-time Lexi MacMillan had doubled the tally. The second half belonged to Alex Stuart, she opened with a shoulder-height deflection and followed with two deflections at penalty corners for her hat-trick. Lexi MacMillan got the other following a successful 2v1 situation.
In the final encounter of the day Grange went to Hillhead and came away with a 1-0 win, Heather Croll grabbed the winner.
