Edinburgh University win classic Women’s Scottish Cup Final in Glasgow

Women’s Scottish Cup Final | Edinburgh University 4-4 (4-3) Watsonians

A Women’s Scottish Cup Final goal-fest was won by Edinburgh University with a 4-3 shootout victory after a 4-4 draw in normal time.

It was an edgy opening to the match with both sides finding their feet, but the first corner of the game wouldn’t take long to arrive. From the corner, Watsonians opened the scoring and it was a drag flick by Emily Dark finding the bottom corner. 1-0.

As the opening quarter reached an end Edinburgh University bagged an equaliser. From a penalty corner, Cat Nelli blasted a low pile driver off the left post and in for 1-1.

In the second quarter Watsonians began to turn the screw as they forced the students back.

Eventually, some good build up down the left saw Sarah Jamieson pick out Beth Dodds at the far post to sweep home for 2-1.

It quickly went to 3-1 when Jamieson clinically found the net with a vicious reverse shot across the keeper.

The students quickly responded and it was Nelli who popped up again to finish off a long pass from the left wing by Sophie Hinds. 3-2, and a double for the young striker.

In the third quarter it was Edinburgh University who turned the screw. Jess Ross was hugely influential, as was Neave Halliday, and Nelli was playing with full confidence.

In the final quarter the goals began to flow again. First Watsonians went 4-2 ahead when Bex Jones injected a penalty corner for Dark to slam the ball into the bottom left corner.

Immediately, the students came forward and some great play by Ross led to Nelli pouncing on the ball to prod home from close range for her hat-trick. 4-3.

Then came the late equaliser and a swift counter down the left saw the students carve Watsonians open and secure a far post finish amongst a pile up of sticks. 4-4, and a shootout to separate them.

It was a nail biting shootout and in the end Nelli smashed home the winner for a 4-3 victory to win the cup for Edinburgh University.

Women’s District Cup Final | Edinburgh Hockey Club 2s 2-2 (1-3) Shetland

A 3-1 shootout victory for Shetland after a close 2-2 draw saw them win the Women’s District Cup at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

It was a nervy start to the contest with both sides taking time to settle into the match.

The first chance went to Edinburgh when some lightning shift skills saw Emma Stirling twist and turn into the circle before her final effort was denied.

Then Shetland came close when Cara Leask shot through the goalkeeper’s legs at a penalty corner routine but it was cleared off the line.

The opener came in the second quarter and it went to Edinburgh. A pass across the face of goal found Angela Davie at the far post for a tap in, and 1-0.

After half time Edinburgh doubled their advantage. Tiffany Shi pounced on a loose pass and ran through on goal before finding the bottom left corner for 2-0.

Shetland immediately struck back and an improvised finish at the far post by Rhea Nicholson saw her sweep the ball home for 2-1.

The goal spurred Shetland on and the piled in on the Edinburgh goal. The equaliser then arrived via stroke and Megan Hibbert slammed the ball into the bottom left corner. 2-2.

It was all set up for a nail biting final quarter, and it was nervy from the first whistle to the last, and it would take a shootout to separate the sides.

Shetland came out on top with a 3-1 victory to lift the silverware in Glasgow.

Women’s District Plate Final | Granite City Wanderers 2s 1-3 Glasgow University 3s

The Women’s District Plate stayed in Glasgow as a 3-1 victory for Glasgow University 3s, over Granite City Wanderers 2s, saw them lift the silverware at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

The first great chance of the match fell for Glasgow University 3s and it was a lovely turn and shot by Mads Bower, but it was well dealt with by Amy McFarlane in goal for Granite City Wanderers 2s.

It was the Glasgow students who broke the deadlock half way through the opening quarter. A lovely three pass move saw Frankie Blair set up Ruby Tindall to slot a low effort home for 1-0.

Bower came close to a second goal at the end of the first quarter but a sensational diving save by McFarlane at the left post denied the goal.

Glasgow University doubled their lead in the second quarter and it was another goal for Tindal. The striker was in a foot race with the goalkeeper, who rushed out to the edge of the circle, but it was Tindall who won the race and slipped a low shot against the backboard for 2-0.

A penalty corner routine for Granite City Wanderers saw Rishiga Srimayooran denied by the left post via the leg guard of Maddie Thomson, as they looked to pull a goal back.

Wanderers battled back and found the net in the third quarter. Romy Bryce took the ball midway in the university half and tore forward on a great solo run before slamming the ball into the bottom left corner for 2-1.

In the final quarter the Glasgow two-goal cushion was restored when Yazi Murray latched onto a Bower drive towards goal for a tap in. 3-1, which was how it stayed, and the students were victorious.

Women’s Scottish Plate Final | Glasgow High Kelvinside 5-1 Edinburgh University 2

The Women’s Scottish Plate was won by GHK with a fantastic 5-1 victory over Edinburgh University 2s at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

GHK went on the offensive right from the first whistle but Edinburgh University 2s weathered the early storm fairly well.

The first corner of the game went to GHK and they made it count. Lucy Williamson slammed a low drag flick through the students’ charge and made it 1-0 to the Glasgow side.

GHK secured a two goal advantage from their second corner of the match and again it came from a thunderous low strike by Williamson for her second.

In the second quarter the students pulled one back through a bit of magic by Alex Pitchford. A long aerial ball into the circle was brought down by Pitchford and quickly dispatched into the bottom right corner before the keeper could set. 2-1.

In the third quarter Williamson was determined to grab a hat-trick for GHK but Orla Tait in goal for the students was equally determined to deny her.

The third goal eventually came for GHK and it was a deflection from a penalty corner by Joanne Boyle that made it 3-1.

In the final quarter Boyle bagged her second and GHK’s fourth with a lovely move into space at the near post before shifting it past Tait for 4-1.

Williamson’s hat-trick of corner goals seemed inevitable and it came via a powerful low smash into the bottom left corner for 5-1, to complete the scoring.
