Two wins in a row for Scotland women over Wales at Peffermill
Scotland women won their second match of a three match series with a 2-1 victory at Peffermill. Following yesterday’s 2-0 win it clocks up a series triumph with a game to spare.
Scotland started well and were on the front foot from the outset. The first attack of the contest saw Heather McEwan burst down the right side and pass to Charlotte Watson at the far post, but the keeper was out quick to block and the danger was averted.
Despite Scotland’s strong start it would be the visitors who would score first. A penalty corner rebound fell kindly for Beth Bingham who fired home from a tight angle to give Wales a 1-0 lead.
Scotland came close to equalising from a penalty corner of their own but Fran Lonergan’s powerful low effort was saved at the bottom left post.
After the first break Scotland were on the attack again, and a lovely run by Ava Wadsworth saw her zip a pass across goal but it just evaded Cat Nelli at the far post.
Scotland’s equaliser would come soon enough and it came from the penalty spot. A penalty stroke to Scotland and Watson clinically buried it into the bottom left corner for 1-1.
In the blink of an eye Scotland went ahead. An excellent turn and pass from Lonergan in the Welsh circle saw her pick out Mhairi Low to knock the ball home for 2-1.
The third quarter was a tight affair with the closest to a glimpse at goal coming from Anna McWilliams who skipped into the Welsh circle before being smothered out at the vital moment.
Wadsworth came close to making it 3-1 in the final quarter following a penalty corner stramash, but her scoop was padded away by the keeper.
In the end it was a comfortable 2-1 win for the Scots and they meet again in the final match of the series tomorrow at 10am at Peffermill.
Team Captain, Eve Pearson, said, “We’re really happy. We created a lot of chances and we pressed really well, so we’re really pleased. Even though we went a goal down we were very composed, and didn’t let it affect us, then scored not long after. Fot the next game we’ll be looking for the same again. It was 2-1 today, and 2-0 yesterday, so I think we’d like to score some more goals since we’re created a lot of chances, and try to keep a clean sheet tomorrow.”
