Wildcats women and Grange men move up Premiership top six table
With Clydesdale Western`s fixture against Edinburgh University postponed the challenge for the chasing pack was to close the points gap on the leaders. So, how did they fare?
Well, second placed GHK failed to make the necessary progress after going down 2-1 to Wildcats at Auchenhowie. The Cats took the initiative and were two up at the interval through Kate Holmes and Fran Lonergan, and although Lucy Williamson pulled one back for GHK it was not enough to salvage any points from the contest. The result is that the Cats have slipped into fourth spot with the Edinburgh students idle today.
However, Watsonians took full advantage of the situation and recorded a comfortable 6-0 win over Glasgow University to move into second spot, but still five points behind Clydesdale Western. The contest was over by the interval when Jenna Park, Sarah Jamieson and Emily Dark at a penalty corner put the champions three up. The second half was much of the same with further goals from Ailsa Small, Ellie Wilson from a set piece and finally Katie Crawford.
In the men`s competition Grange are beginning to get attached to the 4-1 score, that was their victory over Edinburgh University at Peffermill. And the result means that they leapfrog the students into third spot. The Chaps seem to be on the move upwards.
It took Grange 25 minutes to get their noses in front, at a penalty corner Robbie Croll scored with a direct shot. By half-time Grange had doubled their tally with a spot conversion from Dylan Bean. The students showed a bit of resistance when Keir Robb`s cross/come shot went in off a Grange defender to reduce the deficit to a single goal. But Dylan Bean restored Grange`s two goal lead with another goal from the penalty spot, and with five minutes remaining Jamie Green, in his first game back from long term injury, got behind the defence and slipped the ball past the Edinburgh keeper for Grange`s fourth.
Western Wildcats retained pole position with a 3-2 win over Hillhead and manager Ally Scott simply said, “we`ll take the three points and move on.” Hillhead were always a potential tricky opponent after their recent cup result against Grange, but the Wildcats survived the challenge.
Wildcats were two up at the interval through Adam Mackenzie and a penalty corner conversion by Jamie Golden. In the second half Hillhead pulled one back but the result was sealed with another set piece strike from Fraser Moran. Hillhead did get a late goal but it didn`t alter the destination of the three points.
The Watsonians bandwagon continues with a 5-0 win at ESM Lions and that keeps them in second spot, just two points off leaders Western. Here there were doubles for Danny Cain and Gabe Tenner while Tommy Orr got the other.
In the Scottish Cup Dunfermline Carnegie squeezed through to the next round on penalties after a 4-4 draw. The Fifers scorers were Jack Tweddle, Andrew Doyle from the spot, Theo Wood and Josh Love.
