Western Wildcats men’s promotion hopes very much alive in Puconci

Today`s back-to-back victories maintained Western Wildcats’ perfect record after four matches and they move into pole position in the pool, although rivals although Danish champions could well come alongside with a game left to play. So promotion for the Scots is still very much on course.

WESTERN WILDCATS 13 SLF MESAICOS (SWEDEN) 0

Western Wildcats men continued their winning streak in some style with a 13-0 mauling of Swedish champions SLF Mesaicos in their third pool match. And the Wildcats jump to the top of the table on full points.

There were goals-a-plenty to go around with Euan Cowan (4) and Adam Mackenzie (3) to the fore.

The contest was effectively over by the end of the first quarter with the Wildcats four up, Fraser Moran bagged a couple, Rob Harwood and Euan Cowan got the others   By half time it was seven up with Cowan scoring twice more and Mackenzie the other.

In the third quarter it was Mackenzie who got a brace, Cowan another and now introducing Cameron Moran to the scoresheet.   The final quarter produced some interest – a sin bin visit for Fabien Goldie, a spot miss and two further goals from Luk Hermsen and a final one by captain Rob Harwood.

WESTERN WILDCATS 5  HP VALCHISONE (ITALY) 4

This was a ding-dong affair, there was never more than a goal between the sides as the contest ebbed and flowed throughout, but the killer came with seconds left from Wildcats` Luke Hermsen to secure the five points.

The Italians seemed to have the edge in the opening exchanges with four penalty corners and goals from Agustin Ceballos and Sebastiano Alifredi although Western`s Euan Cowan did manage a reply.  But then the Scots began to turn the tide, captain Rob Harwood levelled, then Cowan again put Wildcats ahead for the first time just before the interval.

The third quarter had an interesting feel bout it, firstly Ceballos levelled for 3-3, two players made a sin bin visit – one from each side – but there were no further goals.

The final quarter certainly had its fair share of interest.  Firstly Matteo Aimetti`s spot conversion put the Italians 4-3 ahead only for Fraser Moran to level from open play seconds later.  Then a player from each side paid a visit to the sin bin.  But just as the contest seemed to be heading for a draw, up popped Luc Hermsen to find a very belated winner for the Wildcats.

On the match this is what coach Vishal Marwaha had to say, “It was a hard game, the work rate and application was fantastic from the team. We showed great composure particularly in the final quarter to get the win.”
