EuroHockey Indoor Club Trophy – day 2 promotion challenge for Watsonians women in Euros
WATSONIANS 6 HAHK MLADOST 0
Watsonians women knew their task even before this morning’s contest after East Grinstead had beaten Milano 2-0 in the earlier match – even a draw against Mladost would be enough to secure a place in the evening’s promotion pool.
In the end it made no difference as the Scottish champions were comfortable 6-0 winners over Mladost and consequently regained second spot in the pool. After three failed penalty corners in the opening quarter the Scots opened their account through Genevieve Hussell…and they didn’t look back.
The Edinburgh side were two up by the interval after Emily Dark sunk a penalty corner. The scoring continued in the second half, Ailsa Small made it three from open play and then Dark scored her second set piece.
There were another two in the final quarter with Small picking up her second of the match leaving Katie Stott to complete the scoring for a convincing victory. Later today Watsonians will take on the second side from the other pool for one of the two promotion spots, but that will not be easy as they now carry forward their defeat at the hands of East Grinstead and must win their two remaining games to have a chance of promotion. It is doable!
WATSONIANS 0 ROTWIESS WETTINGEN (SWITZERLAND) 2
Watsonians chance to put in a bid for promotion came this evening with a tie against Rotweiss Wettingen from Switzerland who also finished second in their pool, but the effort foundered in a 2-0 defeat.
In a tight tussle it was goalless until Elena Trosch opened the scoring for the Swiss and that is how it stood at half-time. In the second half there ensued a brief exchange of penalty corners which came to nothing.
However, with three minutes to go Watsonians replaced their keeper with an additional outfield player – a gamble which did not seem to work. Within seconds the Swiss were awarded a penalty corner and Tamara Trosch buried it …and that was that.
Watsonians coach Keith Smith reflected on the day`s proceedings. “In the first game v Mladost we played well and handled a pressured situation well given both teams could qualify for the promotion pool. We knew we had the ability to win the game, but we also knew we had to be patient and adaptable, and we were, controlling the game from start to finish.
“The first game in the promotion pool v Wettingen was a terrific contest – both teams played at full gas the whole game and the quality from both sides was really high in a game that could have gone either way. Apparently it was a great game for the neutrals.”
On the final game tomorrow against Brezizny Keith had this to say. “If the other game in the pool goes our way tomorrow, we still have the opportunity to earn promotion. It will be super tough – Brezizny have a number of players who won the indoor World Cup with Poland last week in Porec so it will require our best performance yet – but it`s a challenge we can really look forward to.”
SCOTTISH CUP
A hat- trick of penalty corner strikes by Danny Cain laid the foundation to Watsonians men’s 7-2 win over Dundee Wanderers in an all-Premiership clash.
In addition Tommy Orr picked up a couple while Gabriel Tenner and Lynden Ross got the others. Bobby Ralph got both the Wanderers goals. Grange also passed smoothly into the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup with a 9-0 win at FMGM Monarchs.
Robbie Croll was top scorer with a hat-trick, there were two goals each for Jacob Tweedie and Matt Murphy while Dylan Bean from the spot and Livio Belotti completed the scoring.
Up in Aberdeen Premiership side Hillhead were the visitors in what might have been a tricky encounter, but in the end the Glasgow side emerged with a comfortable 5-1 victory.
Murray Ross was top scorer with a couple while the others came from Sean Horgan, Joe Drake and Fraser Ward.
