Day one sees Wales and Austria reach the Women’s EuroHockey Qualifier in Glasgow

Wales 7-0 Croatia

A tremendous 7-0 victory for Wales women over Croatia saw them book a place in the EuroHockey Qualifier semi-final at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

Wales enjoyed good possession in the early stages and were rewarded with the opening goal in the opening quarter. A lovely combination down the right opened up the Croatian defence and Betsan Thomas was on point to slide the ball low into the net.

A lovely counter up the middle of the pitch saw Wales strike a second. A defence splitting pass found Freya Diamond one-on-one with the keeper, and the forward made no mistake with the finish. 2-0.

It went to 3-0 through a clean strike from the top of the circle into the bottom left corner by Holly Munro.

The third quarter saw Wales welcome a fourth goal when a penalty corner zipped into the bottom left corner by Amy Cradden.

Wales pressed Croatia back and went 5-0 ahead when Rachel Goodwin slammed a low effort against the backboard at the bottom left corner.

Munro bagged her second of the contest through a penalty corner blasted into the bottom left corner for 6-0. At the end of the third quarter Caitlin Witham slammed home another penalty corner for 7-0. Wales play Czechia in the semi-final.

Austria 1-0 Lithuania

A close and competitive contest was won 1-0 by Austria with a late strike against Lithuania, in the Women’s EuroHockey Qualifier at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

Four minutes into the contest Austria had the first opportunity from a penalty corner but it deflected just wide of the right post.

Up the other end of the pitch a quick Lithuania counter created an opportunity down the right but the cutback evaded all players rushing in at the far post.

The opening quarter ended goalless and the second quarter continued to be a close and tight contest. Helene Herzog had the best opportunity, blasting goal-ward from a pacey passing move, but the goalkeeper was equal to it.

Two big saves at the start of the second half denied Austria the lead, the second of which was a sensation diving stop at the top left corner.

The game got scrappy and the quarter petered out with the final quarter all to play for.

Daria Buchta fizzed a lovely pass across the Lithuania goal early in the final quarter but found no takers at the far post.

The goal for Austria finally came and it was Marianne Pultar who blasted the ball low into the bottom left corner to make it 1-0.

Lithuania responded well, and went on the front foot, but Austria saw the game out well and took the victory. Austria play Scotland in the semi-final.
