Western pass Tayside test.
Milne Craig Western edged out VWS Dundee Wanderers by a single
goal in a tense nervy occasion at a very windy but dry Riverside
Park today in the Women’s Subway National League.
Both sides suffered through the loss of experienced
Internationalists from their respective team sheets with Wanderer’s
influential play maker Vikki Bunce and Western’s striker Holly Cram
missing through injury.
The strong wind had a major effect on the game with both sides
finding it difficult to put together cohesive passages of play with
weight of pass in particular proving testing. However Western did
manage a telling move when Catriona Ralph found Ali Howie running
free on the right and driving into the circle her cutback allowed
young schoolgirl Jennifer Eadie to sweep the ball past Carmin Dow
to give Western the all important lead going into the interval.
There was not much to choose between the teams with Western
enjoying the majority of the territorial advantage but with
Wanderers dangerous on the break without finding an end product.
Western were wasteful with the chances they created but had the
satisfaction of taking the crucial three points and maintaining
their challenge in second place to champions Grove Menzieshill
going into the winter break.
Meanwhile Grove were in rampant form against a young shell
shocked GHK team at Strathallan with Linda Clement (4), Ailsa Wylie
(3), Ali Bell (2), Louise Carroll, Kat Cameron, Louise Campbell and
Danni Johnston all on the mark in a comprehensive13-0 win.
Grove, with the exception of a draw against Wanderers, have brushed
aside all challenges to date and are strong favourites to continue
their dominance of the women’s scene.
Giffnock continue to keep the pressure on Western with a
comfortable three goal win over basement team Grange EL who are
still looking for their first win of the season. Goals from Jackie
Fortune, Lucy Lanigan and Rhona Simpson ensure that Giffnock are
still in the hunt once the league season comes out of winter
hibernation next Spring.
Edinburgh University have moved quietly into fourth place after
a battling two goal victory over a stubborn Glynhill Hotel Kelburne
team at Peffermill. Player/coach Sam Judge gave the students the
half time advantage with a cleanly struck straight strike from a
set piece and early in the second period Sarah Robertson doubled
the lead. Judge expressed her pleasure at her team’s first clean
sheet of the season.
