Wanderers going for a hat-trick of titles
Champions VWS Dundee Wanderers, Milne Craig Western and
Grove Menzieshill are likely to make up the triumvirate of
challengers for the women`s Subway national league title again this
season.
Wanderers are looking for their third consecutive title, but the
ambitious Tayside club would appear to have lost coach Iain
Strachan, whether temporarily or permanently, is as yet not
clear. Further, playmaker Vikki Bunce, so influential in
Wanderers` two successful years, will not feature.
Instead Bunce will be in San Diego for the Great Britain training
camp and five test matches against the USA. The champions
should start off with a full six points in their opening games
against CALA Edinburgh and Granite City Wanderers.
Last season Wanderers won the championship with the loss of only
four points and a five ahead Western in the runner-up
spot. But Western`s coach Neil Menzies feels the time
has come for his charges to break the recent Tayside monopoly of
Wanderers and Grove.
“Given that we ran Wanderers close last season, I definitely
think we have the potential to win the league this season. We
have largely the same squad as last year with a good balance of
experience and youth,” said Menzies. “I would expect
the challenge to once again came from the Dundee sides, both may be
without key players, but both will still be very strong.”
Once again, Western will have Giffnock`s Kareena Marshall in
their ranks, her club is not involved in the indoor scene.
Western should also finish the day with six points, they also play
CALA and Granite City.
Former champions Grove disappointed last season and finished
third in the final table. But they should at least
start with back to back victories over their own second string and
Clydesdale.
Grove`s captain Kat Cameron was a little coy about her side`s
prospects. “Our aim is just to take one game at a time
and have a consistent season. Furthermore, experienced
outdoor players like Louise Baxter and Linda Clement have committed
to playing indoor this year.”
Over the years the other five teams in the division have made
little or no challenge for the title, and avoiding the drop has
been their main concern. Newly promoted Granite City
Wanderers have a baptism of fire in their first outings in the top
flight, they have title contenders Western and Wanderers as their
first opponents.
