Uddingston schools festival proves a hit
Uddingston Hockey Club continued their excellent youth participation drive when the club held another successful primary school festival at Hamilton College earlier this month.
The festival was held to celebrate the success of the first six week block of their school coaching programme, where school children in primary 3 and 4 received hockey taster sessions between August and November this year.
A total of 9 primary schools involved in Uddingston’s school programme attended on the day, bringing an average of 40 children each, meaning over 350 children had the opportunity to play in the festival over the course of the day.
Although adverse weather was forecast, the rain stayed off to allow for a dry day for games to be played. The standard of the hockey was impressive by the youngsters, many still less than 8 years old. It was also encouraging to see so many parents attend to cheer on their little ones.
The club and schools look forward to the next festival in March 2015, which will involve the primary 5 and 6 children. This tournament is planned to be even bigger with a few new schools recently added to Uddingston’s school coaching programme involved.
In total Uddingston currently have 11 primary and 4 secondary schools within its school programme with all schools running at least one after school club with some schools running two or three due to demand. This has resulted in a large increase in kids coming along to the club’s own youth sessions and starting to play in youth and senior teams.
The club would like to thank Hamilton College for the use of their pitch and hospitality on the day, as well as thanking all schools and staff who took part on the day as well as all volunteers and helpers who made the event possible.
Uddingston Hockey Club would encourage any child who took part or would like to take up hockey to come along to one of otheir youth training sessions on a Tuesday or Thursday evening. For more details please visit the Uddingston website.
