Uddingston school hockey festival proves a hit with pupils
Uddingston Hockey Club Hosted hockey festivals over two days last week to celebrate the hard work of the P6 children who had been practicing hockey, as part of the club’s in school programme, during their PE timetable.
Eleven schools took part in either a morning or afternoon session, where teams played in continuous friendly games in a ¼ of the pitch. All games were for fun, with no scores kept, however competition was still fierce with teams desperate to beat their local rivals.
The schools that attended included; Hamilton College, St. Mary’s, Muiredge, Aitkinhead, St. John the Baptist, Bothwell, St. Brides, Fernhill, Wellshot, Thorntree, Quarrybrae.
Over the two-day festival almost 550 children took part making the festivals Uddingston Hockey Club’s largest festivals to date. However, this was expected due to the ever growing in school coaching programme where the hockey club coaches schools across three local authorities; totalling 15 Primary Schools and 4 High schools.
This enables coaches to coach hockey to children from P1 up to S6. The programme was described as the most successful in-school coaching programme in Scotland by Scottish Hockey Union Development officers.
For most of the children, it had been the first time they have had the chance to play on a hockey specific water based astro-turf pitch. They were excited and impressed by the playing surface and by the size of an actual shooting area as opposed to the confined to the small ‘D’ within the school gym hall.
Uddingston Hockey Club would like to thank all schools and teachers who attended the events, as well as all volunteers who took time to umpire and assist on the day. We hope to host our next tournament in March of the new year with the attention placed on the P4 classes who will be receiving in-school coaching in the new term 2016.
Uddingston Hockey Club’s youth training sessions have ceased for the Christmas break and will resume in the first week in February (Tuesday 2nd and Thursday 4th).
