Scottish Hockey to review competitions with members in advance of 2014-15 season
Following the conclusion of the Aberdeen Asset Management National League competition, Scottish Hockey is now outlining a process for review in advance of the 2014/15 season.
At the 2013 AGM, the members of Scottish Hockey positively agreed to the adoption of competition principles:
- Fixed Competitions Calendar, including meaningful games for clubs throughout the entire season and desire to raise standard of play and performance
- Circuses/Events to create competitions and events that are attractive and exciting for players, clubs, officials, spectators, media and sponsors
- Friday Night Lights, including arranging local derbies for clubs
- International Player Availability, including reducing the impact of the international calendar on competitions
At this point, it is worth noting that these principles received almost universal support from members at the 2013 AGM.
The formation and agreement of these competition principles was a result of an extensive consultation exercise with the hockey community in Scotland in the months leading up to the AGM.
This included canvassing the opinions and ideas of players, coaches, officials and volunteers via surveys, meetings and forums to help shape the future of the sport in Scotland.
Following the agreement of the competition principles, a competition format and structure was agreed and circulated to clubs in advance of the 2013/14 season.
Over the course of the season, the organisation has received positive feedback from members of the hockey community both in Scotland and further afield, including support for:
- Staging central venue events in both Edinburgh and Glasgow
- Live broadcast streaming of, and on-demand access to, ‘Awesome October’ and the Indoor Play-Offs via YouTube
- Introduction of ‘Friday Night Lights’ for senior and youth competitions
- Introduction of play-offs to keep the season meaningful for all clubs right until the final fixture of the season, generating a higher intensity of matches and tournament conditions.
- Opportunities for training and mentoring of umpires and officials at central venue events to improve standards
- Ball patrol training for younger participants at central venue events
- Coaching seminars and workshops at central venue events
While Scottish Hockey recognises the importance of adhering to the competition principles adopted last year, it also recognises the requirement to build on the positive outcomes and to adapt and improve areas of the format and structure to make the league competitions stronger.
This was also clearly communicated at last year’s AGM.
Therefore, Scottish Hockey will issue a survey to all members on Monday 14 April to collect feedback on how we can make improvements and build on the positive outcomes from this season.
The results will be analysed and used to shape adaptations for the format of competitions for the 2014/15 season.
