The Scottish Hockey Heritage Group (SHHG) is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich history of hockey across Scotland. Since our first meeting in February 2022, our focus has been on national records and collections. Now, we are excited to expand our efforts to include districts and clubs, ensuring that every part of Scottish hockey is represented.
On Monday, 29th September 2025, the core SHHG team—Jenny Grassick, Alan Veitch, Jacky Burnett, and Evlyn Raistrick – were joined by four representatives from West District George Pate, Keith Joyce, Scott Baird, and Gordon Black. Their involvement marks a significant step forward in our mission to reach all corners of Scottish hockey.
The West District team has already begun a pilot programme to help clubs document their histories, including:
• Formation date
• Lists of office bearers
• Match results
• Notable people
• Grounds and venues
• Memorable stories
Many clubs have published their histories, often to mark significant anniversaries. From various collections we know of the following books:
• A Chap of the Old Block, Grange, Centenary, 2004
• A History of Inverleith Hockey Club, 1917-67
• Histories of Watsonians Hockey Club,
• Aberdeen Hockey Club, 75th Anniversary
• 50 Years in Hockey, ICI Grangemouth
• The History of Stepps Hockey Club, 75th Anniversary
• History of the Western Hockey Club, from 1898
• Dundee Wanderers, 80th Anniversary, 2015
• Dunfermline Carnegie, Diamond Jubilee, 1970
• Sticks Across Tayside, Midland , Centenary, 2007 and Diamond Jubilee, 1967
• SWHA and SHA Golden and Diamond Jubilee Books
• Scottish Hockey Competition Results, Alan Veitch, 2023
• And 100 Years of Scottish Hockey, 2000
We believe there are more histories out there—if your club has a book or indeed a story to share, please let us know
At the meeting, Jenny Grassick stepped down as chair and was warmly thanked for her outstanding work in establishing the group and raising the profile of Scottish hockey heritage.Evlyn Raistrick will now chair the group. Alan Veitch will continue his work on playing records across all competitions and age groups. Jacky Burnett will lead efforts to record oral interviews, and Evlyn will work with Scott Baird to compile a list of Honorary Members—an important group to be recognised at an event next year.We were pleased to welcome Karin Gallacher, SHU Board Member and People’s Committee representative, who provides a vital link with Scottish Hockey. As always, remember it’s their heritage we’re looking after!
To continue our work, we need your help:
• Records and Memorabilia: If you have archives, memorabilia, or stories to share, please contact us before they are lost.
• Funding: We are grateful for recent donations from former international players and supporters, but we need ongoing support. If you have experience in fundraising or know of potential sources, we’d love to hear from you.
• A Home for Our Collection: We are actively seeking a permanent home for our heritage collection. If you can assist, please get in touch!
Preserving our hockey heritage is a team effort. Whether you can share records, help with funding, or offer a venue for our collection, your contribution will make a difference.
Together, we can ensure that the stories and achievements of Scottish hockey are remembered for generations to come.
