Scotland women held to a draw by GB EDP at Peffermill
Amy Costello and Fiona Burnet were on the scoresheet for Scotland women as they were held to a 2-2 draw by GB EDP at Peffermill. It was the first of two training matches as the Scots build towards an exciting summer at Birmingham 2022 and the EuroHockey qualifiers in Dunkirk.
The opening of the match was a midfield battle but there was good period of pressure at the end of the quarter for Scotland. First, some good skill by Fiona Burnet saw her weave into the D, but the forward was crowded out before she could shoot, and the ball was cleared.
Then a delightful aerial ball found Louise Campbell one-on-one with the goalkeeper but a brilliant save denied a goal when Campbell tried to lift the ball over the advancing keeper.
Scotland continually pressed the D and then Katie Robertson fired a low hard shot that bounced off the keeper’s leg guards as the opening quarter came to a close.
Early in the second quarter Scotland found the back of the net when Amy Costello made it 1-0 with a lovely feint then finish from the top of the D.
Scotland had a tremendous chance to go 2-0 ahead through a counter attack when GB EDP mis-trapped the ball at a penalty corner. Laura Swanson picked out Katie Robertson who squeezed the ball through to Campbell, but the goalkeeper was out quick to block.
Scotland survived a scare as half time approached when a low penalty corner strike thundered against the post, but moments later GB EDP found the back of the net with a close range finish to make it 1-1 at half time.
The heavens opened during the half time break and what was already a very windy day made conditions a lot more challenging.
Sarah Jamieson came close to putting Scotland back in front but her powerful shot crashed against the back stanchion rather than the net.
Then Katie Robertson on the turn zipped a shot just wide of the top left corner as Scotland turned the screw.
A second goal came close through a majestic mazy run by Jamieson, which saw the ball flick just wide of the mark from a tight angle.
In the final quarter Scotland deservedly retook the lead. An attack down the right found Fiona Burnet in the middle of the circle and the ball was buried high into the net to make it 2-1 to Scotland.
The second half ended just as the first did with EDP grabbing a late equaliser. A penalty corner was deflected into the bottom left corner to make it 2-2, with the honours ending even.
