Western first reversal while the chasing pack all win in the men`s Premiership

It was an interesting start to the Men’s Premiership’s top six campaign. Western Wildcats’ perfect record was given a 4-1 mauling by a Grange side at the top of their game.

The result has put the Premiership title into the melting pot, Wildcats are now only two points ahead of second placed Watsonians who were also 4-1 winners over Hillhead. So it`s all in the mix.

After a goalless first half at Fettes, Grange took the lead with a penalty corner strike from Robbie Croll that was deflected into the net by a defender. Four minutes later the Edinburgh side doubled its tally with an open play goal from Matt Murphy, he turned and shot from the top of the circle that beat the keeper. And that was the score at the interval.

In the third quarter Grange extended their lead to three when Dylan Bean received the ball close in and cleverly lifted the ball over the Western keeper. However, seconds later Western reduced the score to 3-1 with a penalty corner strike by Jamie Golden.

Would Grange hold out or would Wildcats stage a comeback? The question was answered with four minutes left when a Jacob Tweedie solo run down the left was finished off with a powerful shot past the keeper, and the points stayed at Fettes.

So what had Grange manager Martin Shepherdson have so say about the occasion? Well he said: “We were very pleased about the result, the whole side played very well throughout.  It was a bit of a vintage performance but undoubtedly it was the best we have played all season.”

Watsonians continue to bark at Wildcats` tail, they are only two points adrift after a 4-1 win over Hillhead, Danny Cain scored twice and the other goals came from Roddy Craig and Duncan Riddell. Fraser Ward got Hillhead`s consolation.

In fact, 4-1 seems to be the score of the day as Edinburgh University went to ESM Lions and came away with the same result…and now the students are still two points behind Watsonians but now only four away from Western. Keir Robb was top scorer with a double while Iain McFadden and Johnny Bradley were also on target for a four goal lead, but in the final quarter Jack Collister scrambled the ball over the line following a cross by Tom Clarke for a consolation.

In the women`s Scottish Cup Grange visited Hillhead and came away with a 5-2 victory.  There were two goals each for Jen Cain and Freya Philips while Heather Croll got the other.   But it was 2-2 at the end of the first quarter with Wendy Macintyre and Rachel Osborne scoring for Hillhead but the game then ran away from the Glasgow side.
