Derek Keir Announced as New Scottish Hockey CEO

Scottish Hockey is delighted to announce the appointment of Derek Keir as the new Chief Executive Officer

With professional experience across all sport and physical activity, Derek began his career in Disability Sport with Sheffield Wednesday before studying for his Post Graduate Certificate in Physical Education at the University of Bath. During this time Derek took part in a programme with UK Sport for the International Development of Excellence and Leadership in Zambia and subsequently co-founded a charity to support young sports leaders with their education in Zambia.

Professionally Derek trained as a teacher in Bath and then London and had roles in school sport and club sport before starting with sportscotland as a Partnership Manager in 2013. After four years with the national agency for sport Derek took on the role of CEO for the Camanachd Association where he played his part with his staff team and partners to help deliver some of the following projects;

  • a new £10 million pound facility investment delivering 10 new changing rooms and a shinty experience in Inverness
  • a performance camp for 43 teenage girls taking place just outside New York City this summer
  • Mowi Disability Festival – a residential camp for 95 young people with disabilities delivered by the CA  in Aviemore
  • Continued sponsorship for major events across the sport for the next three years
  • Sold out tickets for the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup final
  • Continued coverage for the sport through podcasts, website, youtube and 7 live matches on MG Alba and BBC Scotland
  • A strategy for shinty and extending the network supporting our sport to include 196 training teachers deployed in shinty playing communities.

Derek Keir said “After serving as Chief Executive Officer for the Camanachd Association for seven amazing years I am really humbled and excited at the opportunity to join Scottish Hockey as CEO. Meeting with some of the staff, directors and volunteers last week was a brilliant insight to the ambition and expertise that already exists in Scottish Hockey and I cannot wait to meet the wider team and get started in the role.

With an anticipated start towards the end of Summer, Derek joins the governing body at a critical time but with the confidence that it has been left in an an excellent position to flourish and shine by the outgoing CEO.
