Watsonians and Edinburgh University out on their own in the Women`s Premiership
Watsonians’ relentless drive towards retaining the women`s Premiership title continues unabated, after they were 3-1 winners at fifth placed Grange. The champions still lead the table by five points from Edinburgh University.
In an exchange of penalty corners Emily Dark put Watsonians ahead only for Heather Croll to equalise. However, by the interval Dark sunk another set piece to give her side a 2-1 advantage. Although the champions’ lead remained slender, and anything could happen, the three points were confirmed when Anni Arthur scored Watsonians` third.
The Edinburgh students kept up their challenge to Watsonians hegemony with a comfortable 6-1 win over Wildcats at Peffermill – but with a five point shortfall and Watsonians winning ethic, it is beginning to look like a forlorn hope with three games left.
Jika Nyirenda was top scorer with a couple while Ava Smith, Harriet Platt, Katie Swanson and Ava Findlay were also on target.
Clydesdale Western returned to winning ways with a 4-1 win over GHK and now move above Wildcats into third spot in the table – but both sides are well adrift of the top two. There were two goals for Heather O`Brien while Anna Hoolaghan and Millie Steiger got the rest, Olivia McKnight scored GHK`s reply.
And now to the lower six competition.
Top side Uddingston were 4-1 winners at Hillhead with two goals from Lucy Hogarth and others from Olivia Mullen and Mya Shaw, the result leaves the Glasgow side still second from bottom and in the relegation zone.
Hillhead`s plight was made no better when Inverleith went up to Aberdeen and returned with a 9-0 victory – and they now advance to a safer ninth in the table.
Finally, in the battle of the universities St Andrews came out on top by 3-2 over Glasgow. Maura Holden, Kerri Bolivar and Lucy Jamieson were on target for winners while Rhiannon Carr and Dara Devine replied for Glasgow. The latter now drop down to tenth, only three points ahead of Hillhead.
