Western record first victory in Europe
Milne Craig Western showed great courage to win their crucial
relegation battle with CA Montrouge from France in the European
Challenge in Bra, Italy on Monday to ensure survival in this
division.
Still struggling to find consistency, Western went into the
interval with a three goal lead with the goals coming from Sam
Judge (2) from open play and fellow Internationalist Catriona Ralph
with what in the end was to prove the crucial strike following a
set piece breakdown.
The inexperience and nerves of this young Western side began to
show a little in the second period and the French reduced the
arrears to a single goal with some fifteen minutes still to play.
However Western held their nerve and, despite failing to make the
most of further chances created, held on to the slender
advantage.
Manager Elaine Macara commented “We never seem to do things the
easy way and should have won convincingly. The youngsters did very
well in difficult circumstances and Helen Walker’s experience
proved to be important in keeping things calm during the tense
closing stages.”
