Unlucky thirteen for Grange
EUROLEAGUE (BARCELONA)
GRANGE 0 ROTTERDAM 13
Grange succumbed to the power of crack Dutch side Rotterdam
in their opening pool match at the EuroLeague in Barcelona, they
went down 13-0 to the free-scoring Dutch, unfortunately the highest
score in a single game in the six year history of the
competition.
To have any chance of making the knock-out stages of the
EuroLeague next year the Edinburgh side must beat German champions
Berliner tomorrow, and to do that coach Colin Clarke must rebuild
the confidence of his shell-shocked charges.
The writing was on the wall when Jeroen Hertsberger scored with
Rotterdam`s second penalty corner in the opening minutes of the
contest, and by the interval the Dutch side were four up through
Simon Child, Hertsberger again and Paul Melkert.
Grange`s chances were limited to isolated opportunities, Matt
Connor missed the ball at the far post while Colin McIver`s reverse
stick chance was saved by the goalkeeper.
In the second half Grange played with courage and dedication,
but were left chasing shadows by the talented Rotterdam side who
scored nine times for the record score. Hertsberger
scored another two, Melkert notched his hat-trick, Nick Wilson
bagged a couple, and the other strikes came from Sjoert Gerretsen,
Bos Campbell (was he playing for the right side with that
surname??) and finally Joost von der Berg with an overtime penalty
corner.
To their credit Grange continued to attempt to take the game to
Rotterdam and isolated chances fell to Cammie Fraser and Duncan
Riddell, but no way past the Dutch keeper. At 9-0
Grange took off their goalkeeper Sean Hadfield and new signing
David Woodcock went between the posts, but a further four goals
were scored.
