Unbeaten Inverleith top Women’s National League

Having secured the League title with a hard fought 3-2 victory over Fjordhus Reivers the previous week, Inverleith travelled to Gannochy on Saturday looking to maintain their unbeaten league run and finish the season undefeated. Having drawn 4-4 on the season’s first visit, Inverleith were not underestimating the Stirling University opposition and turned up ready to go one last time this season. At a rainy Gannochy, Inverleith took an early lead through Christina Farrar with the students equalising from a corner in the 2nd quarter. As the game wore on and spaces opened up, Inverleith started to relax and added goals from open play by Kirsty Cannon, Steph Bain and a second for Farrar. The physical game finished 4-1 and a delighted Inverleith team were presented with their trophy and medals in front of their small band of supporters and a very sporting Stirling University side. The girls and the club are absolutely elated to have finished the season unbeaten after lots of hard work from all – a phenomenal achievement.

The core of this Inverleith squad has been together for a number of seasons – with several having come through the ranks of the youth section from U8s onwards. More recently, the squad has introduced experienced national league players and has also been strengthened by the introduction of a group of junior players including National Emerging Girls squad members. During the season the team put away 84 goals with Milly Berndes-Cade claiming top goal scorer.

The team’s success has been safely guided by Head Coach James Stuart who worked hard with the girls whilst combining the role with playing for the Inverleith Men’s 1 team. The Women’s promotion will see Inverleith competing at the highest domestic level both indoor and outdoor for both women and men for the first time in club history – a great achievement from all sides.

A delighted captain Eilidh Thomson has praised the hard work of her teammates. She added ‘I think we have really thrived as a club this year. The league title has been a long time coming for the team and the club. However, we would never have got here without all the hours put in over the years by the youth coaches and helpers. I hope that they enjoy our success too. Our special thanks also to Frank Hinds and Comprehensive Design Architects who have supported us through thick and thin.’

Final words from Coach Stuart who is already planning for next season – ‘We’ve got a really exciting young team and our aim is to stay and be a Premiership side for many years to come’.
