Scottish Hockey Heritage Group officially launches website
Today the Scottish Hockey Heritage Group (SHHG) officially launches its website explaining more about its aims and recording the results of some of the group’s work so far.
The SHHG started its work in 2022 aiming to preserve, share and celebrate the history and heritage of our sport in Scotland. The website can be accessed here – https://www.scottish-hockey-heritage.org/
As we approach Armistice Day, it’s a poignant moment to reflect on the Scotland men internationalists who died in the conflict of World War 1 (WW1) and World War 2 (WW2). You can read a biography of each of the 16 players from WW1 and the 8 players from WW2, hear about their hockey and military careers and much more at https://www.scottish-hockey-heritage.org/our-heritage/lest-we-forget/
There is plenty to read on the website, including such diverse items as club competition winners, Scotland players who have won GB caps, and hockey dinners. SHHG is now accumulating the results and cap player data from all the international outdoor matches and the roll out of this information is now underway. The website has photographs of international teams of the past with many more to come. Future initiatives will include a gradual roll out of more information about our GB Scottish players’ achievements and experiences.
Oral Histories is one of the key workstreams SHHG wishes to develop. Here we can capture the stories of our hockey players, umpires and administrators who have contributed so much to our game.
The group needs more help and therefore anyone who is interested in the work and can help somewhere, can get in touch – there are many roles to fill such as researcher; story writer; hockey collections; oral history interviews; website development and support; social media development; record keeping; photo collections etc.
There is so much hockey heritage we need to capture! If you can help, in any way, please email the SHHG at [email protected]
