Scots find going tough against excellent English
Scotland`s under 16 sides found keeping pace with
their English counterparts testing at Bellahouston today, as
the girls went down 3-0 while the boys fell 8-1 to a slick English
outfit.
The U16 girls went one behind early in the encounter,
with an Lily Elliot shot propelling the English into
the lead. Scotland`s first chance fell to Greaves
Clydesdale`s Jennifer Eadie but unfortunately she shot just wide of
the target. Ayr`s Evie Travers kept the Scots youngsters in
the game with a couple of fine saves to keep the score down to a
single goal at the interval.
The English went two up just after the interval through Chloe
McIntosh, but back came the Scots; at a penalty corner
Maisie Morris`goal-bound shot unluckily cannoned off the foot
of Ali Hendry. England then made the game safe when Fran
Ruffel scored the third goal.
Meanwihile, the U16 boys also fell behind to an early goal
when Elliot Smith opened the scoring with a drag flick at a penalty
corner. Dundee Wanderers` Fergus Sandison almost equalised
with a spectacular shot, which rebounded off a post. But by
the interval English dominance led to a further four goals, Smith
scored again, Tom Alsop got two and the other came from Oliver
Ashdown.
The Scots’ youngsters came back into the contest early in the
second half and pulled one back when Matthew Jackman`s shot was
brilliantly deflected into the roof of the net by Watsonians`
Andrew Oliphant. This only spurred the well-drilled English
side into further goals, Alsop collected his hat-trick, Ashdown got
another and James Simpson picked up one from a penalty corner.
