Scotland women lose to Wales in second test match in Cardiff

A tight second match of a three game series saw Scotland women lose 1-0 to Wales in Cardiff. It follows yesterday’s 3-1 win for Scotland who have several young players playing their first games for Scotland.

It was a close match from the outset but one where Scotland couldn’t quite put their usual flow together.

The only goal of the contest went in favour of Wales early in the second quarter as Livvy Hoskins flicked the ball off the post, for it to bounce off goalkeeper Jess Buchanan’s back, and in from a penalty corner.

Scotland had the ball in the back of the net soon after through a lovely finish by Mhairi Low, but it was ruled out for hitting a foot in the build-up.

The Scots had their chances against the experienced Welsh side. Five corners, including one from Jika Nyirenda that was cleared off the line, and an effort from Bronwyn Shields that was deflected wide.

In the end it was a good win for the home side, and sets up a series decider in Cardiff.

Head Coach Chris Duncan said, “We’ve had two very different games this weekend, and today I think experience really told. Wales have a lot of experience in their side, and they’re well coached, and although we played some nice hockey, we just weren’t clinical enough.

“It’s a good lesson for our young exciting group of players. We want to be playing pressure games, so having a series decider sets things up nicely for that experience.”
