Scotland women draw with Spain at Euros in Monchengladbach

A Heather McEwan equaliser in the final quarter gave Scotland women a 1-1 draw against higher-ranked Spain at the EuroHockey Championship in Monchengladbach, Germany.

Scotland had a tremendous opening quarter in terms of chances and possession, and showed great composure against the highly rated Spaniards.

Jenny Eadie came close to opening the scoring with a direct run and shot, which was well saved. Then Ruth Blaikie slipped a sublime pass into the Spanish circle for Fiona Burnet to dive towards, but she couldn’t get a touch on the ball and it zipped wide.

Then, against the run of play, Spain scored. A turn and shot by Lucia Jimenez found a way past Jess Buchanan for 1-0.

The game swung from side-to-side with the teams looking evenly matched. Ellie Mackenzie was influential and Costello was solid as the defensive linchpin.

Buchanan made a number of excellent saves to keep Scotland within reach of Spain.

Scotland’s press was exceptional throughout the match and they went for broke in the final quarter to try and find an equaliser.

With four minutes to play Scotland equalised. Mackenzie went on a blistering run into the circle and picked out Heather McEwan to touch it home for 1-1.

Spain piled on the pressure in the closing stages but the Scots held firm and took their first point of the tournament.
