Scotland U21 Women battle hard in defeat to England

The Scotland U21 Women’s squad lost their second match of a three-match series against England 2-0, in preparation for the Junior European Championships in July.
The squad, having had a disappointing game the day before, was determined to play to their potential in their second performance.
The game began much more positively for Scotland than the previous encounter, with the Scots piling on a great amount of pressure in the English half.
The Scots were disciplined in defence during the press resulting in turnovers from England as they felt the pressure. Scotland won their first corner of the match towards half time but could not capitalise on the opportunity, and the score remained 0-0 at the break.
The beginning of the third quarter initiated a fifteen minute spell where England gained a number of corners. Scotland managed to deal with the pressure and prevented the conceding of a goal. This was until a well-rehearsed corner found its way into the back of the net to give England a 1-0 lead.
Following this, the English continued to step up the pressure and found another Scottish foot in the circle. A similar corner routine found a deflector at the back post despite valiant efforts by the Scots defence. 2-0.
As England continued to increase the pressure in the final quarter Scotland went down to ten players. However, the Scots remained positive and composed to gain back a foothold in the game and keep the score at 2-0.
Scotland U21 Women Head Coach Neil Menzies said, “Overall the match today was a huge learning curve for the girls who are now taking confidence in today’s performance into their final game.”
