Scotland men finish fifth in FIH World Cup Qualifiers with win against Canada
A sensational goal-scoring performance saw Scotland men claim fifth spot at the FIH World Cup Qualifiers with a 5-1 victory over Canada in Santiago, Chile, gaining vital ranking points.
Scotland’s top form from the Korea match continued into the playoff against Canada with a good start to the game. It was the second quarter where Scotland began to inflict some damage. First, a penalty corner led to a stroke and Jamie Golden converted clinically to make it 1-0.
Golden soon struck again with another trademark penalty corner strike to make it 2-0 and give the Scots a healthy cushion.
The second half began with a Golden hat-trick. A rocket drag flick into the top left corner put Scotland 3-0 ahead and looking comfortable.
Golden’s lethal corner ability continued when he launched another powerful drag flick into the net for 4-0.
Canada pulled one back with a sliding far post finish by Mathew Sarmento to make it 4-1.
Scotland was comfortable in the final quarter and completed the scoring when Ali Douglas swept home to make it 5-1.
