Russell Garcia steps down as head coach of Scotland Men

Scottish Hockey today confirmed that Russell Garcia
has resigned from his position as Senior Men’s Head Coach with
immediate effect following Scotland’s EuroHockey Nations
Championship II campaign in Ukraine.
Garcia has taken the decision to step down from the
Head Coach position in order to return to living permanently in
Germany and focus on his family life outside of the sport. The
decision was taken by Garcia with the international season coming
to a conclusion for this year and Scotland not back in competition
until the New Year.
Callum McLeod, Scottish Hockey Performance Manager,
said:
“On behalf of Scottish Hockey, I’d like to
sincerely thank Russell for his work and commitment with the senior
men’s squad over the last few years and wish him well as he returns
to Germany to spend more time with his new family. His great
international experience and knowledge has been an asset to the
team and I’m sure the players will echo our sentiments as Russell
leaves the head coach post.
“With the Commonwealth Games now less than three
years away, our focus will turn to recruiting a new head coach who
will hopefully see us through the next three years and build on the
foundation Russell has set in place.”
Notable successes during Garcia’s tenure include
bronze medals at the World Cup qualifier in New Zealand at the tail
end of 2009 and the EuroHockey Nations Championship II this past
weekend. Garcia also led the Scotland team to the 2010 Commonwealth
Games in Delhi, where the Scots finished 9th in the
tournament.
